Craving a tech panic? The Simpsons does Black Mirror on Disney+ today
The Simpsons veers into Black Mirror territory with a new Disney+ episode, swapping chuckles for chills in a way that’s likely to raise a few eyebrows.
Here we are again – another The Simpsons special drops on Disney+, but this time, Springfield is looking more Black Mirror than cartoon suburbia. The Simpsons: Yellow Mirror lands on the streamer today, 26 August, and it’s clearly not just another day at Moe’s. If you ever fancied Homer trapped in a digital existential nightmare, well, today’s your lucky day.

Springfield, but much weirder
The whole thing kicks off with Bart breaking the fourth wall in the trailer – he outright warns viewers that 'anything can happen in the Yellow Mirror.' He’s not kidding. The special pulls together two bizarre, tech-gone-wrong tales that are darker (and at points, honestly more unsettling) than your average Treehouse of Horror. It’s not parodying Black Mirror directly, but the episode takes all those Black Mirror anxieties about AI and warped realities and drops them, messily, right in the middle of Springfield.
- The first story sees Homer questioning if anything in his life is real, all because of a dodgy lamp. There’s a flashback to his school days, where he confides in Barney that he might not even exist. Not to worry though, because Barney just points out it’s 'fish stick Friday' and they move on, as one does.
- The second story gets a bit scarier if you don’t like creepy robots. Maggie is targeted by a new AI projection named Hailey, who takes control of Maggie’s tablet, brainwashes the baby, and then starts going after the rest of Springfield. Imagine AI threats, robotic guard dogs, and, in the end, Hailey holding the entire planet in her digital palm.
A dark-tech sendoff for Disney+
It’s not random – this special is actually the last of three Disney+ exclusive Simpsons episodes that dropped over the summer. The previous two were Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition and Simpsley. Disney’s giving us one last round of streaming chaos before Season 38 turns up on Fox, starting 27 September. If you’re counting, that means the regular run of the show isn’t going anywhere – we’re just seeing some exclusive oddities for the diehards (and, presumably, the algorithm).
For those keeping score, The Simpsons has been going since Matt Groening first sent Homer bumbling round Springfield decades ago, and at this point, the Disney+ collection has amassed quite a backlog: every main series episode, special, short, and The Simpsons Movie. But this one? Easily the most Black Mirror it’s ever gotten.
