Cillian Murphy opens up about the one Christopher Nolan film he wishes he’d been part of, revealing a personal connection and the emotional impact it had on him.

There’s a certain magic in the creative partnership between Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy. Their professional rapport, forged in the early 2000s, has become something of a modern legend in the film world. Nolan, having been captivated by Murphy’s striking gaze in 28 Days Later, initially considered him for the role of Bruce Wayne. A dinner meeting later, it was clear Murphy wasn’t quite the right fit for Gotham’s caped crusader, but the director saw something else—an ideal collaborator. Instead, Murphy landed the part of Scarecrow, a role that, while memorable, didn’t quite allow him to take centre stage.

Over the years, the pair have worked together on six films, each time deepening their creative understanding. Yet, it wasn’t until 2023 that Murphy was finally handed a role that truly matched his talents. His portrayal in Oppenheimer was nothing short of transformative, bringing a depth and humanity that balanced Nolan’s penchant for grand spectacle and intricate timelines. It’s tempting to say that the film’s success owes as much to Murphy’s performance as to Nolan’s direction.

Missed Opportunities and Lasting Impressions

Despite their frequent collaborations, both have occasionally taken time apart. Murphy, for instance, expressed a certain relief at not being involved in The Odyssey, perhaps still recovering from the demands of Oppenheimer. Yet, there remains one project that continues to haunt him. In a 2023 interview, Murphy confessed that missing out on Nolan’s cosmic epic left a mark.

“I adore Interstellar just because I find it so emotional,”

he admitted, recalling his experience watching the film in the cinema with his young children.

“It just had a big impact on me,”

he added.

“It broke my heart. I love watching his films when I’m not in them because you don’t have to freak out about the size of your ears, or whatever.”

It’s not difficult to see why the film struck such a chord. Interstellar stands out among Nolan’s works for its emotional resonance, exploring themes of family, loss, and the relentless passage of time. The story follows Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, a farmer and former NASA physicist who faces an impossible choice: leave his children behind to save humanity, or stay and watch the world fade away.

What Might Have Been

Murphy’s admiration for the film is tinged with a sense of longing. The role of Cooper, with its blend of scientific curiosity and raw parental devotion, would have suited his talents. Still, it’s hard to picture anyone but McConaughey in the part, with his particular brand of rugged charm and understated bravado. The performance is widely regarded as one of his finest, and the film’s emotional weight is, in no small part, thanks to his portrayal.

For Murphy, watching Interstellar from the audience rather than the set was a bittersweet experience. The film’s exploration of sacrifice and connection clearly resonated, leaving him with a sense of what might have been. Even so, his ongoing collaboration with Nolan continues to produce some of the most compelling work in contemporary cinema, each project adding another layer to their shared legacy.
