A third instalment in the acclaimed horror series is moving forward, with Cillian Murphy in discussions to reprise his iconic role. Alex Garland is set to write the script, though the film’s title and director remain under wraps.

Following the enthusiastic reception to 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple earlier this week, confirmation has arrived that a third entry in the celebrated horror saga is officially underway. Cillian Murphy, who first appeared in 28 Days Later, is reportedly in negotiations to step back into his well-known role. Alex Garland, who has been a key creative force behind the series, is returning to craft the screenplay, though details regarding the film’s title and director are yet to be disclosed.

The trilogy has long been in the pipeline, with the studio initially opting to film the first two chapters consecutively before giving the green light to the final part. Danny Boyle directed 28 Years Later, while Nia DaCosta took the helm for The Bone Temple. Boyle has previously expressed a desire to return for the concluding chapter, though nothing has been confirmed at this stage.

Box Office Success and Critical Acclaim

The decision to complete the trilogy appears straightforward for the studio, given the commercial and critical success of the previous instalments. 28 Years Later enjoyed one of the most impressive horror openings of the year, amassing over $150 million at the box office since its June release. The film currently boasts an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its strong reception among critics and audiences alike.

Initial responses to the forthcoming sequel have been overwhelmingly favourable, with early viewers describing it as

“one of the greatest horror movies of the decade”

and

“nastier and – surprisingly – funnier than the first part.”

Such praise has only heightened anticipation for the next chapter.

Returning Cast and New Faces

The Bone Temple will see the return of Ralph Fiennes and Jack O'Connell, reprising their roles as Dr. Ian Kelson and Jimmy Crystal, respectively. Alfie Williams joins the cast as Spike, a fresh addition to Jimmy’s cult. Murphy is also set to make a brief appearance as Jim, the bike courier who survived the original outbreak in 28 Days Later, ahead of his expected involvement in the third film.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 16 January. In the meantime, horror enthusiasts can look forward to a host of other upcoming releases to add to their watchlists.
