Epic scale, tighter cut: Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is poised to surprise with a leaner runtime, as producer Emma Thomas hinted following Nolan’s CinemaCon 2026 tease.

So, Christopher Nolan is heading back into 'epic' territory with his big-screen take on 'The Odyssey', but there’s already a curveball: this monster of a movie might actually have a runtime that’s kind of… reasonable? If you’ve watched a Nolan film in the last decade, you know the guy likes to stretch his legs with long runtimes (remember 'Oppenheimer'? That was a workout). But if you’re bracing yourself for an ultra-marathon with 'The Odyssey', you might be in for a surprise.

Wait, Nolan’s Going Short(er)?

Here’s the scoop: Producer Emma Thomas, who is basically Nolan’s creative partner in crime, told the crowd at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that 'The Odyssey' will clock in under three hours. Yes, under. She made sure to say the movie’s still in post-production, so that number could shuffle around a bit, but for now, it’s not going to hit the epic Oppenheimer length. Considering how much 'The Odyssey' promises to squeeze in – gods, monsters, men lost at sea – I honestly thought they’d go full binge-mode.

Nolan’s “Nightmare” Adventure

At CinemaCon, Nolan didn’t just talk. He dropped the first extended footage to give everyone a taste of what’s coming. Here’s what he showed (and, yeah, it sounds as wild as you’d hope):

  • The legendary Trojan horse scene (yes, the one every schoolbook ever told you about)
  • Storm-tossed sea voyages that look about as relaxing as a root canal
  • A peek at the Cyclops – because it’s not an Odyssey without at least one enormous, people-eating monster
  • And, woven into all of the chaos, a real emotional through-line: Odysseus missing his family and trying desperately to get home.

Nolan himself had this to say about making the film (and, based on his delivery, it sounds like he’s still drying out):

'It was an absolute nightmare to film — but in all the right ways. We were on boats, up the mountains, in the caves, in the beating sunshine, sideways rain, wind…'

So, yeah – no green screens in a Burbank warehouse for this one.

The Cast Is Stacked

Let’s talk about this lineup. Matt Damon is suiting up as Odysseus, which somehow totally makes sense and not at all at the same time. But Nolan’s pulling out all the stops with his ensemble:

  • Anne Hathaway
  • Tom Holland
  • Zendaya
  • Lupita Nyong'o
  • Robert Pattinson
  • Charlize Theron

Seriously, if there’s a 2026 'Most Star Power Per Square Foot' award, this movie is already a frontrunner.

Release Info

Mark your calendars: 'The Odyssey' is aiming to hit theaters on July 17. The runtime might be (relatively) tight, but between the old-school madness of epic filmmaking and this nuclear-level cast, expect something big.
