Chicago Fire wrote out Cruz after 15 years — and Joe Miñoso says it wasn’t his choice
Joe Miñoso’s Cruz made his final Chicago Fire appearance on November 4, but he’ll be around behind the camera later this season—here’s why he’s bowing out and how.
Right, let’s get into it: Joe Miñoso, who’s played Cruz since season 1 of Chicago Fire, is officially out as a regular at Firehouse 51 – but not quite gone from the show altogether. If you’ve been confused about whether he jumped or was pushed, here’s what’s really going on.
Joe Miñoso wrapped his last on-screen stint as Cruz on 4 November, after 15 years with Chicago Fire.
Not His Choice to Leave
Bit of clarity upfront: Miñoso didn’t actually ask to leave. The decision was entirely down to the showrunners, who chose to write Cruz out of the main line-up. Sounds harsh, but that’s showbiz – nobody’s job is safe, even in network telly that rattles on for ages.
In an interview with USA Today, Miñoso admitted this wasn’t something he’d planned for. He explained what it felt like being told his time was up after all those years, describing the sense of loss. Apparently, he found out on the last day of filming for season 15, while sitting in the producer’s office – plenty of time to stare at the cast photos and feel nostalgic. Still, there’s a silver lining: he’s finally getting the chance to direct episodes of the very show that made him a household name, which was always his ambition in the business.
Speaking about leaving, Miñoso described it as '15 years of a life that I’ve lived inside of someone’s skin. There’s no way that there isn’t going to be some level of grief.'
How They Wrote Out Cruz
If you were bracing for a dramatic blaze or a rooftop rescue gone wrong, relax – Cruz isn’t dead. His exit is about as friendly as these things get: open-ended, family-driven, and with room to come back if the writers ever want to tap him again. In his final episode, Cruz’s wife gives birth to twins. There’s a hospital scene where Archer pops in for a chat, telling him he’s impressed by Cruz’s recovery from injury and reckons there’s a shot at his old job. But then Chloe, his wife, is visibly unimpressed at the idea, which gives Cruz pause for thought about what’s best for his new family.
Ultimately, Cruz makes the call to Severide that he won’t be coming back to Firehouse 51. Instead, he’s moving to Minneapolis to focus on family. Severide is completely blindsided by the news, which to be honest probably mirrors plenty of the audience’s reaction as well.
One last bit for the fans: though he’s stepped away as a regular actor, Miñoso’s not vanishing entirely. He’ll be back later this season – just behind the camera instead of in front of it, finally realising his long-time dream of directing for the series.
