At the Office Romance premiere, Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein amped up the hype by rating each other’s on-screen smooches — and Goldstein gave Lopez a 12 out of 10.

Right, here’s one for anyone who secretly enjoys hearing actors awkwardly dissect their own onscreen snogging. Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein have been doing the promo rounds for their new Netflix rom-com, Office Romance, and the conversation got straight to the bit everyone really wants to know: who’s a better kisser?

12 out of 10, apparently

This all started when Lopez herself called Goldstein 'the best kiss' of her career — yes, she actually said that in public. When put on the spot about it at the film’s premiere, she basically owned up: 'I did say that. I was on the spot.' Not exactly a gushing endorsement, but still, it’s Jennifer Lopez, so not nothing.

Goldstein, who you probably recognise from Ted Lasso growling at people, seemed a bit gobsmacked. His reaction?

'It was better than winning an Emmy. When I heard she said that, I was like, "Okay. Okay, now turn. I guess I’ve peaked."'

He didn’t stop there, either. When asked to rate Lopez’s kissing skills, he gave the whole thing a full marks, tongue firmly in cheek: 'Best. I give it a 12 out of 10.'

Snogging for the camera: pros weigh in

So what makes a top-tier onscreen kiss, anyway? Lopez reckons it’s all about it feeling 'natural' — even though, obviously, they’re literally doing it for the film. In her words:

'We’re doing it for the movie, so, you know, it kind of has to tell the story... It’s like any other part of the scene. It has to just feel real.'

Goldstein, clearly the self-deprecating sort, chimed in with some sage advice for anyone about to lock lips with a Hollywood icon while a dozen bored people hold lights and boom mics:

'If you start thinking about it, then it’s insane. It’s insane kissing on camera. If you think about it, as soon as you question any of it, it’s a disaster. So, you just have to be in it.'

And in case you were wondering if it’s actually as cringey as it looks, Lopez had a blunt answer about whether romantic scenes ever feel awkward with an audience of crew in the room: 'No. It’s, I mean, it’s part of the job, you know.'

What’s Office Romance actually about?

Putting the snog chat aside for a second, here’s what you need to know about the film:

  • Director: Ol Parker (who’s no stranger to a rom-com, if you’re keeping score)
  • Writers: Brett Goldstein and Joe Kelly
  • Producers: Both Lopez and Goldstein are also attached as producers, so if nothing else, any awkwardness is entirely their own fault
  • Cast: Goldstein (Daniel), Lopez (Jackie), plus Betty Gilpin, Bradley Whitford, Amy Sedaris, Tony Hale, Rick Hoffman, and Edward James Olmos
  • Release date: Out on Netflix 5 June

A slightly strange detail here: between the Emmy jokes and the mutual flattery, you do wonder if they’re having a bit of a laugh with the whole rom-com PR dance. Either way, Netflix will be hoping the chemistry translates to streams (and yes, there will be at least one allegedly 'best ever' kiss for you to over-analyse).
