The Blair Witch Project is heading back into the woods, with a reboot stalking theaters in 2027.

The Blair Witch is back to cause more sleepless nights, whether you like it or not. There’s a new reboot in the pipeline, and after ages of rumours and meetings in shadowy rooms, it finally has a (sort of) release date. If you’ve been waiting for another shaky-cam nightmare in the Maryland woods, here’s what you need to know.

Release Window: Wait a Bit Longer

The new Blair Witch Project reboot is officially set for 2027. That’s as specific as anyone’s willing to get for now. Jason Blum – yes, that Blum – let the news slip in an IndieWire chat, saying that both the Blair Witch and another Paranormal Activity flick are on his roster for next year. So add ‘return of the witch’ to your five-year plan.

Keeping It in the Family (Sort Of)

This new instalment isn’t one of those 'throw the name on and run' jobs. According to producer James Wan, they were determined to loop in the original team, at least in spirit. He told IndieWire the reboot had to get 'all the original people that were involved' blessing and involvement – apparently out of respect for the franchise’s legacy. Translation: no one wants to get hexed by the old cast.

Who’s Actually Making This One?

  • Director: Dylan Clark – a name you likely haven’t heard much, unless you’re deep into horror shorts. His previous work includes Catcher, Storytime, and Hatched. He’s also attached to direct a movie version of his recent short Portrait of God, with Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele producing. Not bad company.
  • Writers: Clark is also rewriting the script, working from an original draft by Chris Devlin. So if the plot goes off the rails, you’ll know exactly who to nod at in the credits.
  • Producers: Blum and Wan are joined by Roy Lee, Adam Hendricks, and Greg Gilreath. Executive producers will include Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams (i.e. two out of the three original cast members), plus Steven Schneider, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Alayna Glasthal, and the original filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale. That’s quite the bonfire circle.

Plot? Yes, There Is One

Not many details have made it out of the woods yet, but the basic setup is this: a family goes for a lovely camping trip and—shock!—they start vanishing, one by one, after hearing unsettling noises in the forest. Very Blair Witch. Whether the shaky-cam will return with them or not, no word yet.

In Case You Forgot the Original Carnage

The first Blair Witch Project was a box office juggernaut in 1999, raking in nearly $250 million. That was followed by two sequels (Book of Shadows in 2000 and Blair Witch in 2016), but let’s be honest – neither set the world on fire critically or at the tills.

For now, the so-called curse marches on with a new batch of Hollywood names, a little bit of fan service, and a family camping trip gone entirely to hell. Stay tuned for an exact release date – you’ll probably hear noises in the woods first.
