Blade Film Axed: Moon Knight Faces New Foe in Season 2
Marvel’s supernatural plans take a sharp turn as Blade’s solo outing is scrapped. Find out which unexpected rival is set to challenge Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight in the next chapter.
Those who had been quietly hoping for Mahershala Ali’s turn as Blade may need to shelve their expectations for the foreseeable. Word from industry insider Jeff Sneider, shared on a recent episode of The Hot Mic podcast, is that the much-discussed film has been cancelled. Instead, Blade is now tipped to join the ensemble cast of the Midnight Sons project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Should this development hold true, it opens the door for a host of Marvel’s more mystical characters to step into the limelight. There’s also talk of Black Knight making a return, potentially as a thorn in the side of Moon Knight when the second series eventually lands.
Midnight Sons: What’s Brewing After Blade’s Exit?
At present, with the Blade film’s fate still officially unconfirmed, details about the Midnight Sons remain thin on the ground. Earlier reports suggested Marvel Studios had been quietly working on expanding its supernatural corner, but that effort was put on ice for a while. Development has since resumed, with Ghost Rider now rumoured to be taking the lead—a role previously earmarked for Blade.
Since Marvel’s recent creative shake-up, updates have been few and far between. Still, eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed a few breadcrumbs scattered throughout the MCU. Projects like Werewolf by Night, Agatha All Along, and the first Moon Knight series have all helped lay the groundwork for a supernatural crossover.
And then there’s the ending of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which introduced Clea alongside the good doctor—both of whom have ties to the Midnight Sons in the comics. It’s a subtle nod, perhaps, to longer-term ambitions for this shadowy corner of the franchise.
Black Knight’s Return: A New Adversary for Moon Knight?
With the Midnight Sons seemingly on the horizon, speculation is mounting over Black Knight’s possible reappearance. Kit Harington’s portrayal in Eternals left some comic fans wanting more, as the character’s full potential was barely scratched.
In the comics, Black Knight and Moon Knight have clashed before, most notably in Avengers: The Collection Obsession, where the cursed Ebony Blade and Moon Knight’s fractured psyche collide in dramatic fashion. It’s not hard to imagine a similar dynamic playing out on screen, should both characters find themselves in the same series.
Brad Winderbaum has hinted that even if a second series doesn’t materialise, Moon Knight will be back in some form. That leaves the door open for a confrontation with Black Knight, perhaps within the Midnight Sons film itself.
