Beloved Scarlett Johansson Classic The Nanny Diaries Lands Netflix Remake
Netflix is dusting off The Nanny Diaries, the 2007 Scarlett Johansson rom-com, for a small-screen reboot, reviving the Upper East Side nanny saga for a new generation.
Here we go again — another one for the 'didn't-see-that-coming' remake pile. Netflix is officially turning The Nanny Diaries (yes, that slightly underrated Scarlett Johansson rom-com from 2007) into a TV series. If you forgot about this one, you weren't alone… but apparently, it's getting a second life, and with some intriguing names attached.
So, What's Getting Remade?
Remember The Nanny Diaries? That movie where Scarlett Johansson played Annie — a fresh-out-of-college grad taking a nanny gig with one of those over-the-top Manhattan socialite families, led by Laura Linney being perfectly icy as Mrs. X? The film wasn't a massive hit, but it stacked a pretty wild cast: Johansson, Chris Evans (years before his Captain America run), Alicia Keys, Paul Giamatti, and, again, Linney basically stealing every single scene.
The movie itself came from a bestselling 2002 novel by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, so it's got some literary roots — which is kind of Netflix's thing at the moment.
Who’s Behind the Series?
- Scarlett Johansson isn't popping back up as Annie (she has aged out of Manhattan nanny culture, let's be real), but she’s onboard as executive producer. So she’s at least involved behind the scenes.
- Berlanti Productions is producing (yes, that’s Greg ‘half your TV queue’ Berlanti).
- Warner Bros. Television is in on it, backing the project.
- Amy Chozick (writer/producer, The Girls on the Bus) and Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City veteran) are writing and running the show. That combo pretty much guarantees sharp New York banter, or at least some killer coats.
What’s the New Angle?
Netflix’s take is still all about Annie as a cash-strapped, would-be writer navigating the lives of the Upper East Side’s wealthy weirdos. But the twist this time: apparently, she lands a book deal and actually goes undercover, all while getting a little too attached to the people (and drama) in her orbit.
In other words: 'Eat the rich,' but with more playground drama and, probably, a lot of latte art.
What Else Is Up With Netflix?
In case you missed it, Netflix is tripling down on book adaptations, and The Nanny Diaries just joins the growing list. They're also cooking up projects like Black Hole, The Corrections, Lights Out, and So Far Gone. Someone at Netflix must really, really love a good reading list.
Anything Else to Know?
Not much else on this one yet — no casting news, premiere dates, or teasers to obsess over. But if you’ve been waiting to see what an updated, streaming-era takedown of Manhattan’s richest nannies and their families looks like, this might be worth keeping an eye on. Especially if they find a Mrs. X who can come close to Linney’s ice-queen energy.
File under: remakes you never asked for, but might just hate-watch anyway.
