Anthony Geary, famed for his portrayal of Luke Spencer in General Hospital, has passed away at 78 following complications from a planned operation. His four-decade run on the soap made him a household name.

Anthony Geary, celebrated for his unforgettable turn as Luke Spencer in the long-running American daytime drama, has died at the age of 78. His passing occurred on 14 December, just three days after he underwent a scheduled medical procedure that led to unforeseen complications. Geary had been residing in the Netherlands with his husband, Claudio Gama, who shared the news with friends and family.

“It was a shock for me and our families and our friends,”

Gama remarked, adding,

“For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”

Transforming Daytime Television

Geary’s journey with the soap began in 1978, when he was cast as Luke Spencer. The role would not only define his career but also leave a lasting mark on the genre itself. His on-screen partnership with Genie Francis, who played Laura Webber, became a sensation, culminating in the much-talked-about wedding episode in 1981. That particular broadcast drew an audience of over 30 million, a figure rarely matched in the world of daytime television. The episode even featured a cameo from Elizabeth Taylor, a devoted fan of the series.

His portrayal of Luke Spencer brought him widespread acclaim and a record-breaking eight Daytime Emmy Awards, a testament to his enduring appeal and talent. Over the course of four decades, Geary’s presence on the programme helped shape its legacy and influence generations of viewers and actors alike.

Beyond the Soap Opera

While best known for his work on the soap, Geary’s career extended into other areas of film and television. He appeared in productions such as Intimate Agony, Do You Know the Muffin Man?, The Disorderlies, and You Can’t Hurry Love, showcasing his versatility as a performer. His final professional appearance came just a day before his hospital admission, when he filmed a scene with Anders Hove, another former cast member. The nature of this last project remains unclear, but it now stands as his closing credit.

Life Away from the Spotlight

In 2015, Geary stepped away from public life, choosing to settle in Amsterdam with Gama. After decades in the limelight, he embraced a quieter existence, far removed from the daily demands of television. His legacy, however, continues to resonate with those who followed his remarkable career and the indelible characters he brought to life.
