Tintin’s return is back on the map: Andy Serkis says Peter Jackson still wants to make The Adventures of Tintin 2, reviving hopes for the long-awaited sequel.

So, here’s something you probably haven’t heard about lately: Steven Spielberg, the guy who basically invented the summer blockbuster, has only ever directed one animated feature—and it’s not one you’d expect if you don’t already know. I’m talking about The Adventures of Tintin, that wild and weirdly under-appreciated motion-capture epic from 2011 that some people obsess over and plenty of others still haven’t seen.

That movie’s one of those things where, if you meet a fan, they’ll tell you about it for twenty minutes, usually ending with: 'Why haven't they made a sequel yet?' Well, if you’re among that group holding out hope, there’s finally some news to hang onto—not a greenlight, but not a total dead end either.

Wait, Spielberg Did an Animated Movie?

Yes, Spielberg directed The Adventures of Tintin—it’s in his official filmography, right between Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and War Horse (which is a sentence I still have to double-check every time I write it). Even though it got solid reviews (and has, let’s be honest, aged better than some of his other CG experiments), for whatever reason it never turned into the big franchise people expected. Instead, it gathered a cult following that’s only gotten louder as the years have rolled by.

And here’s the kicker: 2026 is actually the 15th anniversary of the film. If that makes you feel old, join the club.

Fans Still Want More (Louder Than Ever)

The closer we get to that anniversary, the more die-hard Tintin fans have been making noise about wanting a sequel. They haven’t shut up (in a good way), and now it looks like their persistence might actually be paying off.

Andy Serkis: Tintin Sequel Is 'Definitely Not Dead'

So here’s where things get interesting. Andy Serkis—yes, Gollum himself, but in this case he’s Captain Haddock—recently sat down with Collider to chat about his upcoming Animal Farm project. Naturally, the conversation turned to Tintin, since he’s the guy who spent a lot of time in a motion-capture suit bellowing about whisky and treasure maps.

When asked if a sequel will ever happen, Serkis didn’t hedge or dodge:

'Oh gosh, I wish! I really hope so. I love that Tintin film. I loved the process of making that film with such great filmmakers. I think Peter [Jackson] really, really wants to make it, so hopefully down the line.'

In plain English: nobody’s rolling cameras yet, but it’s not off the table. Peter Jackson (the other half of this project's creative brain trust) is still pushing, at least according to Serkis.

What’s the Hold-Up?

Let’s be honest: we’ve been hearing 'maybe someday' about a Tintin sequel since pretty much the day the original came out. Spielberg directed the first; Jackson was supposed to run point on the followup. For reasons that have never been super clear (scheduling? tech headaches? cold feet at the studio?), the project’s been in limbo ever since.

But with Serkis confirming that both he and Jackson are interested—and the fan community making more noise than ever—it feels like the stars could finally align. Maybe. Probably. Don’t hold your breath, but don’t call it a lost cause, either.

The Tintin Cast: Who’s Who From the Original

  • Jamie Bell as Tintin
  • Andy Serkis as Captain Archibald Haddock
  • Daniel Craig as Sakharine
  • Nick Frost as Thomson
  • Simon Pegg as Thompson
  • Toby Jones as Silk
  • Support from a who’s-who of character actors and, yes, lots of digital fur technology (sorry, Andy, it never lets you go)

So, bottom line: a sequel's not a sure thing, but it’s definitely not buried. Tintin fans, feel free to get excited… cautiously.

Stay tuned, because as always with this saga, 'developing story' might as well be the subtitle.
