American Psycho Comeback Inches Closer as Luca Guadagnino's Serial Killer Project Gets a Promising Update
Luca Guadagnino’s American Psycho is officially cutting forward at Lionsgate, with the studio confirming a reimagining of Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel is underway and a script on the horizon.
So, we’re officially getting a fresh spin on 'American Psycho,' courtesy of none other than Luca Guadagnino. If you know your movie auteurs, that’s the director behind 'Call Me by Your Name' and the recent 'Challengers.' Not exactly the first guy you’d peg for a Patrick Bateman bloodbath, but here we are.
Here’s what we know so far: Lionsgate is putting this together, and their President of International, Helen Lee-Kim, just confirmed that a script is on the way. In her words: 'We’ll hopefully have a script for that later in the year.' So, don’t expect this thing on your screens anytime soon—the process is only just ramping up.
What’s Different This Time?
This is being called a 'reimagining'—so it’s not a straight remake of Mary Harron’s cult classic 'American Psycho' from 2000. That one, of course, had Christian Bale cementing himself as the definitive Patrick Bateman: suit-wearing Wall Street psychopath with a taste for business cards, Huey Lewis, and murder. The supporting cast? Stacked. We’re talking Jared Leto, Willem Dafoe, Reese Witherspoon, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, and Chloë Sevigny. Big shoes to fill, no matter who you are.
Who’s Writing This Thing?
Scott Z. Burns (he wrote 'Contagion' and worked on 'The Report') is on screenplay duty for Guadagnino’s take. No casting news has surfaced yet, and nobody’s officially signed on for the infamous Bateman role.
Passing the Bateman Baton
People have, obviously, already started speculating who could possibly follow Bale’s ax-swinging performance. When Bale was asked about it, he seemed pretty chill. In his words:
'Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop. I loved making it with [director] Mary Harron so many years back, fantastic memories of it all. Bold choice of anyone to try to do a—I don’t know if they’re doing a remake or what, I don’t know anything else about it. But all the best to 'em, I like brave people.'
Some chatter online says a few actors have already turned down the part. Who knows if that’s nerves, scheduling, or just good old-fashioned common sense—Bateman isn’t exactly the easiest role to sign up for.
What’s Next?
- Script expected later this year.
- No announcements yet on casting or release window.
- Guadagnino confirmed to direct, with Scott Z. Burns on the script.
- Lionsgate still holding details close, so rumors will probably keep swirling for a while.
In short: American Psycho is officially getting a new lease on life, and it’s happening under some pretty unexpected creative leadership. Whether it’ll be a wild success or a weird misfire, we’ll have to wait and see. But one thing’s already clear: this is going to get people talking—again.
