Amazon’s Mass Effect series is still going ahead despite BioWare shutting down
Don’t write off Mass Effect on screen just yet — despite BioWare being shut down, the series remains in development.
The sci-fi telly landscape is suddenly looking rather empty, and not in a 'wondrous, endless galaxy' sort of way—more 'where’s all the decent science fiction gone?' kind of empty. Doctor Who has finally taken a break after an uninterrupted two-decade run. Star Trek is heading for a total blackout after Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy finish up; that’ll leave Trek fans adrift for the first time in over ten years. Even Disney+ is dialing down all things Star Wars, with nothing on the books post-Ahsoka season two, which doesn’t hit until January 2027.
If you’re wondering what’s supposed to fill that gaping sci-fi hole, Amazon Prime Video is still beavering away at its much-hyped adaptation of Mass Effect. This one’s pitched as a blend between Star Trek’s star-hopping and Game of Thrones’ politicking (good luck to them balancing that). But things got a bit messier on 21 October 2026, as the franchise’s creator BioWare announced it would shut up shop after 30 years. At the very same time, Electronic Arts (EA), who own BioWare, confirmed fresh layoffs and axed that new Mass Effect game they announced back in 2020—not the news fans were hoping for.
BioWare closed its doors in October 2026 after three decades, with EA cancelling the next Mass Effect game at the same time.
TV Adaptation Survives the Wreckage
Despite the developer collapse, several sources inside Amazon have confirmed to IGN that the Mass Effect TV series is still alive and very much kicking, for now. Amazon MGM is producing, with Doug Jung (who penned Star Trek Beyond) as showrunner, and Daniel Casey (Fast & Furious 9 scriptwriter) still on board to handle the script. So at least on paper, they’ve got folk who know their way around spaceships and strange moral dilemmas.
For anyone who somehow missed the past two console cycles: Mass Effect is a critically adored sci-fi RPG series that kicked off in 2007, following a customisable Commander Shepard and their ragtag bunch of humans and aliens as they try to stop ancient, sentient machines (the Reapers) from wiping out all advanced life. The trilogy wrapped by 2012, then limped on with a less-loved spin-off in 2017, but gamers still rank the original games as all-time classics, especially for their storytelling—which, conveniently, is exactly what gets pinched for telly adaptations these days.
What Actually Happened to the Mass Effect Film?
Amazon’s TV plans aren’t the first stab at adapting the series. Way back in 2010, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures had their own go at a Mass Effect film. By 2012 they’d hired scriptwriter Morgan Davis Foehl, but as BioWare’s own Mac Walters revealed (years later, frankly), trying to put the layered, sprawling game narrative into two hours wasn’t just difficult—it never even left the drawing board. That project quietly fizzled out in development hell.
By November 2021, just half a year after Mass Effect Legendary Edition revived interest, word slipped out that the games would finally be getting a telly adaptation. Amazon announced it officially in November 2024. The twist is, they’re not just remaking the trilogy shot-for-shot; instead, they’re following the same model as Fallout (which worked well enough for them), set after the events of Mass Effect 3 and focusing on fresh plots inside that universe. No need to retread old ground or please fans down to the last pixel.

So, even as the Mass Effect games are now orphaned—BioWare gone, new sequels seemingly scrapped—the TV series at Amazon is the last remaining hope in this sprawling space opera. If EA ever decides to revive the games, don’t expect it to resemble anything that’s come before. For now, the fate of Mass Effect rides solely on what Amazon MPEG Studios can put together.
