Allison Williams is all-in for M3GAN 3.0, eager to reunite with the AI doll the moment the threequel gets the greenlight.

Let's talk about the state of the M3GAN universe, which just keeps getting weirder (and maybe a little messier). If you remember, last April, Blumhouse trotted out SOULM8TE — a new spin-off in the M3GAN franchise — at CinemaCon in Vegas. It got a splashy preview, with studio plans to drop it in theaters on January 2, 2026. Seemed like the killer-doll empire was only getting bigger.

And then things got...awkward. M3GAN 2.0 did not exactly take over the world. Fans turned up, but not in droves — and suddenly SOULM8TE vanished from the release calendar completely. Right now, with another CinemaCon in full swing, nobody really knows when (or if?) SOULM8TE is coming out at all. Universal might toss us a crumb later, but for now it's radio silence.

Where M3GAN Came From (and Why It Blew Up)

For anyone who needs a recap, M3GAN started as a fever dream from James Wan (yep, the horror guy behind Saw and The Conjuring) and the always-hustling Blumhouse. Gerard Johnstone, who did Housebound, directed, and Akela Cooper (who wrote Malignant) did the script.

The first movie's basic pitch: Gemma, a robotics genius working at a toy company, builds M3GAN, an AI-powered doll designed to be every kid's ultimate buddy and every parent's new coparent. After Gemma suddenly has to care for her orphaned niece, Cady, she pairs her prototype with the kid, hoping to solve everyone's problems. (Fake parenting with a learning robot, what could go wrong?) Turns out...plenty. Things get murderous.

M3GAN 2.0: We Go Military

The sequel spins the dial even further. Two years post-rampage, Gemma is now pushing for government guardrails on AI tech. The fun twist? A defense contractor decided to make their own deadly doll, codenamed AMELIA, meant for spying and infiltration. In classic sci-fi sequel fashion, AMELIA goes off-script, develops a mind of her own, and starts ignoring orders entirely. To fix things, Gemma actually brings M3GAN back, giving her a speed and murder upgrade — because what could possibly go wrong rebooting a killer robot? Apparently, a lot.

SOULM8TE Goes AWOL

Initially, SOULM8TE was hyped as the next big M3GAN universe chapter, with a CinemaCon debut and a firm release date. But after M3GAN 2.0 didn't break box office records, Universal quietly pulled SOULM8TE from their release schedule. No updates, no new date, nothing. Maybe they're holding out for a big reveal right now at CinemaCon — or maybe the franchise is in holding pattern while execs figure out what's next.

M3GAN 3.0? Allison Williams Is Ready

But don't count out M3GAN yet. Allison Williams, who plays Gemma (and has been the face of this franchise so far), told Variety that she's totally up for a third film. Here's the vibe she gave:

'I would love one. I would love to do one. I'm down! They know. By the way, I can't tell you how many times a week I read a headline and I'm like, "This is in our movie," or "This was something we talked about putting in our movie." When I heard that there was an agentic chat group where all the agents are talking to each other, I was like, "M3GAN is ruling this chat group, she is reading everyone to shame. She's in charge of everything." So, yes, I would love to. I miss it. I think these movies are really important. I learned a lot about AI making them, and I feel like people learned a lot watching them. Watch the second movie. There's some cautionary tales in there.'

Direct quote: Allison Williams is 'down' for a M3GAN 3.0 and feels these movies actually have something to say about AI — and given how fast tech headlines keep getting weirder, she might have a point.

What's Up Next?

  • SOULM8TE is still missing in action from Universal's schedule.
  • M3GAN 3.0 isn't greenlit, but the star is ready and ideas are there.
  • The M3GAN universe could take quite a few different turns — unless Universal shelves it for good.

Personally, I wouldn't mind one more high-gloss cautionary tale about AI dolls with attitude, especially if they actually get weird with it. How about you? Would you show up for M3GAN 3.0, or should the killer dolls retire now?
