Alec Baldwin Wants to Retire After Rust Tragedy — His Most Candid Look Back Yet
In a candid new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alec Baldwin says he wants to retire as he confronts the Rust set shooting that upended his life and career.
So, Alec Baldwin is getting real about what his life has looked like since the incident on the set of Rust — yeah, that incident — and honestly, it sounds like he is officially over the whole 'celebrity workaholic' thing.
The Incident That Changed Everything
Baldwin’s been around forever, from ’90s blockbusters to playing Trump on SNL, but all of that took a backseat when tragedy struck the indie Western Rust. Quick reminder: Baldwin was both the lead actor and a producer on the film, which was shooting in New Mexico on a tight budget — and apparently, not under the greatest conditions, safety-wise.
What was supposed to be a scene with a 'cold' prop gun took a horrific turn. Baldwin pulled the trigger, a very real bullet flew out, and cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed. Director Joel Souza was also injured. The fallout has been long, messy, and honestly exhausting for everyone involved.
Legal Trouble & Clearing His Name
This is where things got even more complicated. Baldwin wasn’t just facing scrutiny from the public — he was actually charged with involuntary manslaughter. Twice. Both times, the charges were dropped, and as of July 2024, he’s finally in the clear legally. But that hasn’t magically fixed things for him, at least on a personal level.
Retirement? He’s Seriously Considering It
Baldwin sat down with The Hollywood Reporter and was brutally honest about how much the tragedy rocked him. If you want his mindset in one line, here it is:
‘We had this incident, this tragedy, in New Mexico, where Halyna Hutchins was killed on the set of the film, and that was unspeakably difficult to deal with. I was home with my kids for three-and-a-half years — I hardly worked at all — and that’s just changing now ... I don’t want to work anymore, I really don’t. I want to retire and stay home with my kids.’
That’s as clear as it gets. Three and a half years mostly off the grid, hanging out with his (many) kids, has dramatically shifted what he wants out of life. Apparently, the idea of getting back on set just doesn’t appeal to him after everything that’s happened.
Still, He’s Got Projects in the Pipeline
- Baldwin was most recently seen in something called Torrente for President (if you missed it, join the club).
- He’s also attached to a couple more projects that haven’t dropped yet: Kid Santa and National Lampoon's Hollywood Hustle. Classic Baldwin — still mixing it up with those oddball comedies.
So, while Baldwin technically hasn't hung up his acting hat for good, it's pretty obvious his priorities have changed in a major way. After everything that’s gone down since Rust, no one can really blame him for wanting to keep it low-key and avoid the chaos of Hollywood.
