Aardman’s Nick Park reveals how the studio will approach AI, balancing innovation with the cherished authenticity of its stop-motion claymation.

Nick Park, the creative force behind Aardman, has addressed the studio’s approach to artificial intelligence, making it clear that while new technology will be explored, the heart of their craft will remain untouched. The studio, celebrated for its distinctive stop-motion claymation, is determined to maintain its unique identity even as the industry shifts.

Balancing Innovation and Tradition

Reflecting on the evolution of animation, Park recalled the impact of computer-generated imagery in the mid-90s.

“When Toy Story came out [in 1995], we thought, ‘How long have we got?’ But we’ve managed to survive CGI,”

he remarked, noting that interest in their traditional methods has only grown over time. While Aardman has incorporated digital techniques, the arrival of artificial intelligence presents a fresh set of challenges and opportunities.

Park acknowledged the uncertainty that comes with technological change.

“Obviously a lot of people will be fearing for their jobs. We want to embrace the technology and find in what ways it’s going to be useful to us, maybe to do animation a bit quicker, but we’re going to be very cautious not to lose our values. The clay is our USP and we pride ourselves in that. Authenticity is the most important thing. It’s where the charm is.”

For Aardman, the tactile quality of clay and the studio’s commitment to authenticity are non-negotiable.

Recent Projects and Embracing New Platforms

The studio’s recent output includes the much-anticipated Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, which arrived in late 2024. This latest adventure sees the inventive duo face a familiar adversary, continuing the tradition of gentle humour and meticulous craftsmanship that has defined Aardman’s work for decades.

In a nod to changing viewing habits, both Vengeance Most Fowl and the 2023 sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget were released via Netflix, marking a significant step for the studio. This move demonstrates Aardman’s willingness to adapt, reaching audiences through new channels while holding fast to its creative roots.

Looking Ahead

With Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom set for a 2026 cinema release, Aardman shows no sign of slowing down. The studio’s careful approach to AI reflects a broader philosophy: progress is welcome, but not at the expense of what makes their work special. As Park and his team navigate the future, the promise is clear—innovation will be embraced, but never at the cost of the studio’s soul.
