Netflix will drop the long-awaited A Different World sequel this fall, ushering in a new class at an HBCU nearly 40 years after the NBC original debuted.

If you grew up watching NBC in the late 80s, you've probably got some pretty strong feelings about 'A Different World.' (And if you didn’t, imagine 'The Fresh Prince' but way more Hillman College sweatshirts.) Well, the show's coming back—sort of. Netflix is jumping into the nostalgia pool and giving us a sequel series, nearly 40 years after the original made its debut. Yep, you read that right: It’s been four decades. Still feel young?

Class Is (Almost) Back In Session

The big news dropped this week: Netflix confirmed the new show's hitting your queue in the fall. They’ve even finished shooting all ten episodes already—filming wrapped up in Atlanta last month. So yes, the hard part is over, and now there’s just the small matter of, you know, waiting it out.

Who’s the New Kid?

This isn’t a remake or an awkward reboot; it's a legit continuation. The series follows Deborah, daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne (iconic characters, if you know, you know), starting her own freshman adventure at Hillman—the same fictional HBCU from the original. The show is leaning all the way into the legacy vibe: Deborah’s got her mom’s attitude and her dad’s pressure to live up to, as she tries to build her own name instead of just borrowing theirs.

Official logline: 'Deborah finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape as she sets out to build her own legacy, while having the time of her life, alongside a whole new generation of Hillman’s best and brightest.'

This Cast Is Stacked

Hardcore fans, you’re not going to be disappointed—Netflix didn’t cheap out. Here’s who’s involved:

  • Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, the daughter at the center of it all
  • Jasmine Guy back as Whitley Gilbert and Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne (yes, with the glasses, obviously)
  • Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks), Karen Malina White (Charmaine Brown), Ajai Sanders (Gina Deveaux), Charnele Brown (Dr. Kimberly Reese Boyer), Jenifer Lewis (Professor Davenport), Dawnn Lewis (Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor), Glynn Turman (Colonel Bradford Taylor), and Jada Pinkett Smith (Lena James) all slide back in for more Hillman chaos

As for the next generation, you've got Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, Kennedi Reece as Hazel, and Chibuikem Uche as Kojo. You'll be hearing a lot more about these names if the sequel hits like the original.

Who’s Steering the Ship?

If you’re concerned this is just some corporate IP cash-in, here’s the good news: Felicia Pride (she’s worked on 'Bel-Air' and 'Grey’s Anatomy') is leading the series as showrunner and executive producer. And maybe the biggest nostalgia flex of all—Debbie Allen, who directed a whopping 83 episodes of the original, is back to direct three episodes and serve as executive producer. Also signed on: Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tom Werner, and Mandy Summers in the executive suite.

So, When Do We Actually Get To Watch?

There’s still some suspense—they’ve only announced 'fall,' not an exact date. But with the whole season already shot and a massive returning-and-new cast, it’s basically Netflix’s to mess up at this point.

If you ever wanted more 'A Different World' (or just need an excuse to rewatch the original before the sequel lands), get ready—Hillman College is opening its doors again, and everyone (except maybe Bill Cosby) is invited.
