100% Rotten Tomatoes British Sitcom Just Dropped a Major Season 2 Update
Riding a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, BBC hit Small Prophets is gearing up for a bigger Season 2, with creator Mackenzie Crook planning more episodes than the debut run.
BBC Two's Small Prophets has basically taken off like a rocket with everyone who's watched it—critics are raving, fans are obsessed, and Rotten Tomatoes apparently found no faults whatsoever (yep, the show's got a 100% score right now). So what comes next? Well, the show's creator and head honcho Mackenzie Crook just dished out his plans, and I've got to say, it's a mix of good news and... bittersweet news.
Crook Lays Out the Endgame
Crook broke it all down during a recent chat at the Series Mania festival (the guy's been everywhere since the show's runaway success). Here’s the rundown: he wants to write a second season—make it eight episodes this time—and then call it quits. That’s right: one more batch of episodes, then that’s the entire story. No endless stringing-along here.
He was pretty blunt about the plan:
'I want to write a second series. I want it to be eight episodes, and then I want to leave it there. I haven’t written it yet. I don’t know exactly what happens, but I think that would be great. First half ends with “to be continued.” Second half, the end. And there’s your story.'
If you’re worried this next season will take another decade to show up, Crook gets it. The first season was his slow-cooked project for ten years—mostly because it took him ages to nail down what the series was supposed to be in the first place. Now that he’s hit his stride, he says finishing actually feels exciting and a lot quicker this time out: 'The majority of the ten years was figuring out what it was. Now I know what it is, I just have to go and finish off the adventure.' And in maybe the most relatable creative statement ever, he added that he’s dying to figure out how all of this madness ends—because he’s the one who will decide.
Just in Case You Missed It: What Actually Is Small Prophets?
Let’s back up for a sec. Small Prophets stars Pearce Quigley as Michael Sleep—a man who, after the gut-punch of losing his partner, somehow stumbles into an alchemical rabbit hole. He finds some kind of recipe for making homunculi (mini artificial people, for the non-occult-movie buffs), and before you know it, he’s using magic to try and figure out what happened to his missing girlfriend. Yes, you read that right: lost love, weird science, and very British magic hijinks.
Why You Should Care (aka, This Show’s Kind of a Big Deal)
- Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100%. That’s unicorn territory.
- Premiere Date: February 9, 2026—so yeah, it’s brand new and people are already glued to it.
- Crook Involvement: This is not just a starring/guest gig. Crook wrote it, directed it, runs the show—he basically is Small Prophets.
- Season Two Details: Not even written yet, but Crook wants eight episodes. Structured as two halves: the cliffhanger first half, and a real ending. No reboot, no mystery box sequel plan.
- How Long You’ll Wait: Hard to say, but Crook promises not another decade.
The Bottom Line
Small Prophets is that rare combination—critically adored, weird in a fun way, and not planning to overstay its welcome. New episodes are coming, but only one last season, so if you’re not on the train yet, you’ve got time to catch up before it all wraps up for good.
