Bond is back with a bang: 007: First Light blasted through 1.5 million day-one sales, giving IO Interactive a blockbuster launch.

Bond is back, and apparently half the world can’t wait to play him. IO Interactive’s latest project, 007: First Light, has landed with a proper splash – and if you know anything about this studio (the Hitman lot), you’ll know they don’t mess about.

Bigger Than Hitman, And That’s Saying Something

First things first: First Light has smashed IO Interactive’s own sales records to bits. We’re talking 1.5 million copies snapped up in the first 24 hours. That’s not just quick – that’s James Bond defusing-a-bomb-while-ordering-a-martini quick. For context, even the studio’s acclaimed Hitman series can’t claim those numbers, so the appetite for a new Bond game is, frankly, massive.

Those Figures Don’t Even Tell the Whole Story

Here’s the kicker: those 1.5 million sales? None of them even include the Nintendo Switch 2. That’s right – one of the biggest gaming platforms out there hasn’t even joined the party yet. So, yes, expect this number to shoot even higher once Bond eventually parachutes onto the Switch.

Critical Response: Everyone’s Impressed

Players have clearly gone mad for it, but critics are just as enthusiastic. As of this week, First Light has an 88 rating on OpenCritic and an 87 on Metacritic. If you care about that sort of thing, those are the kind of scores that’ll get developers in Copenhagen opening champagne at lunch.

'The milestone of 1.5 million units sold in 24 hours reflects overwhelming global enthusiasm for 007 First Light,' IO Interactive said. 'The sales recorded across all platforms underscore the game’s broad appeal and the successful execution of our vision to honour Bond’s legacy in gaming.'

Steam: Not Just for Indies Anymore

Steam, usually the home for weird indie skateboarding games and farming simulators, has turned out to be a bit of a goldmine here. Rhys Elliott, the head numbers chap at Alinea Analytics, reckons First Light shifted at least 500,000 copies on Valve’s platform alone, which translates to a tidy $25 million in revenue. That’s not pocket change – even for someone like Bond.

Elliott pointed out what many might find surprising: Bond games, traditionally console territory, are doing proper business on PC now, thanks to Steam. As he put it, ‘The Steam performance really stood out for this one. It’s the latest example of a traditionally “console” game doing fantastic numbers on Steam.’

And if you’re wondering about the Amazon connection (they own the Bond rights and licensed IO Interactive to make the game), Elliott didn’t mince his words: ‘The early signs are bloody good. The franchise hasn’t had a quality adaptation in decades, and IOI has now delivered one that looks like a serious commercial proposition.’

What’s Next?

Reviews are still rolling in, including ours – eventually. I’ll be getting my hands on it shortly (cheers, review code delays), and yes, given the hype, I’m as curious as anyone to see if it actually lives up to the buzz.
