Zoe Saldaña has spelt out what kept her from signing up to Taylor Sheridan’s series for a year — even after he offered to tailor the lead for her.

Here’s a story you wouldn’t have seen coming: Zoe Saldaña – fresh off a little thing called an Oscar – almost never signed up for Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness. It wasn’t for lack of trying on Sheridan’s part, either. He actually pitched it directly to her, offered to build the series round her, the works. Still, she sat on it for a whole year, nervous as anything – which, for someone who’s literally run around with blue aliens and Marvel supervillains, really says something.

On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Saldaña confessed: 'For a year after he told me that he would write this around me… I, for a year, I said no, 'cause I just didn't believe in me… I kept saying this: If Taylor Sheridan believes in you, someone like Taylor believes in you, then you have no choice but to believe in yourself.'

She was properly intimidated by the idea of living up to the sort of roles Sheridan writes – which, to be fair, do tend to pull in A-listers by the armful. And if you’ve seen his character work, with half of Hollywood queueing up for a slot in his scripts, you can’t exactly blame her for being nervous about filling those boots.

The Big Turnaround

Eventually – after a year of dodging the job offer – Saldaña said yes. Next thing, she’s at the heart of one of Sheridan’s biggest TV hits, playing CIA officer Joe McNamara. Not a bad little comeback from a bout of imposter syndrome. The supporting line-up is nothing to sniff at either: Nicole Kidman (still refusing to age), Morgan Freeman, Laysla De Oliveira, and Michael Kelly all share the bill.

The show’s second series came out storming, notching up three million views in its first week and holding a fat 90% on Rotten Tomatoes for the latest run.

Lioness Series 3 is all locked in and ready to go. The first episode lands on 2 August 2026, streaming exclusively on Paramount+. You’re looking at eight episodes in total, with a fresh drop every Sunday till 20 September 2026. That’s your Sunday evenings sorted for eight weeks running.
