Susan Egan has two names in mind for the leads — and it’s their blend of humour and heart that, she reckons, does the trick.

It feels like Zendaya and Tom Holland have become a pop culture two-for-one deal, doesn’t it? Not content with sharing screens and awkward interviews, they’re also engaged off-set. So honestly, if the two end up starring in another romance together, Disney might as well print the wedding invitations while we wait for the casting announcement.

This time, it’s not just fans mashing their names into romcom pitches, either. The latest ‘what if’ comes courtesy of Susan Egan — the original voice of Megara in Disney’s 1997 animated Hercules. Egan, who was finally inducted as a Disney Legend in Anaheim (alongside the likes of Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson, because of course), was asked about the live-action version that’s been lurching through development for a few years now.

Here's how Egan put it, still sounding a bit in disbelief at the company she shares in the Disney Legends club: "I'm looking at the lineup of all of the other people being honored, and I feel, I don’t know, just it’s a bit crazy. It's a little surreal."

Egan’s Dream Cast

So, who does Egan want to take the torch? Her Megara pick is Zendaya. Makes sense — Meg’s a bit sharp, a bit jaded, and more likely to roll her eyes than burst into song about Prince Charming. Zendaya’s already nailed that playlist of sly, deadpan heroines (see also: her MJ in Spider-Man), so it’s honestly not a huge leap. Egan’s probably onto something.

For Hercules himself, she backs Tom Holland. Boring? Maybe, since fans have already been fantasising about Holland in that Grecian skirt for years. But again, he’s young, slightly awkward, earnest to a fault, and can belt out a tune without falling over. Plus — and this is key — if Disney tries to half-cast the numbers, they’ll get roasted alive by fans who still care about 'Go the Distance'.

  • The Hercules live-action remake has been in development limbo more-or-less since 2020.
  • Early on, the Russo brothers were tapped to produce and Guy Ritchie was set to direct, but creative differences (and, apparently, some rather out-there musical ideas) steered things into a holding pattern.
  • Other names floated for the leads in past years: Taron Egerton and Ariana Grande, but, like most Disney rumour cycles, nothing stuck.
  • There’s even talk the film could morph into a Hades spin-off under another title, depending on which rumour mill you believe.
Hercules has been stuck in development since 2020, with no confirmed stars.

Frankly, even if Egan’s A-list pairing is a stroke of genius, real-world logistics might kill the dream. Zendaya and Holland are both booked solid for what feels like the next decade of their lives. The official word on where Hercules actually stands is as murky as the River Styx, with the studio still figuring out how much TikTok-era 'boldness' it can stomach before the fans riot. But for the trivia files: if somehow Disney does cast this particular pair, just know Susan Egan saw it coming before the rest of us.
