After a long delay, hit crime comedy High Potential finally has a return date on ABC, with Hulu streaming — and a special episode coming next year.

If you've been twiddling your thumbs waiting for High Potential to get its act together and return, some actual news at last: the show’s third season is properly back on the schedule — after that excruciating wait, mind. The crime comedy will be back on ABC from Tuesday 5 January 2027 (yes, 2027 — doesn’t time fly). If TV’s not your style these days, you’ll also find the new season dropping on Hulu.

High Potential Season 3 starts up on 5 January 2027 at 9pm PT on ABC.

The announcement itself came, somewhat fittingly, through a tongue-in-cheek video starring Kaitlin Olson as Morgan Gillory — posted online for the fans. Classic Morgan, she strolls in claiming she’s a consultant for the LAPD with a knack for spotting things others miss. Course, in the video she’s on about the release date itself, smug as you like about sneaking it in: 'I’m a genius, don’t feel bad... Unless you’re also a genius, and then maybe you should.' It’s fairly typical promo stuff: charming, silly, and a bit meta — not that anyone’s watching for the marketing.

Special For the Super Bowl Crowd

If the normal slot isn’t enough, High Potential is also pinching a prime spot on Sunday 14 February 2027 — right after Super Bowl LXI. The ‘special episode’ lands at 10:15pm ET, which shows you just how much ABC is banking on the show pulling big numbers from all the sport fans spilling over.

A bonus episode airs after the Super Bowl on 14 Feb 2027 at 10:15pm ET.

Story So Far (And What’s Next)

If you’ve forgotten where things left off, Season 2 ended mid-chaos: Captain Wagner (played by Steve Howey) got stabbed up, his fate up in the air. There's been zero straight talk on whether Wagner actually survives, but Season 3 apparently picks up right there — so expect a fair bit of ‘will he/won’t he’ before any real answers. Howey might show up for one last curtain call, or that might be it for Wagner entirely. Messy stuff, but that’s this show all over.

Then there’s Roman, Morgan’s ex and Ava’s dad, who last turned up as a shadowy figure during Ava’s art show. The show has been teasing his reveal so long you’d think he was in witness protection. Season 3 supposedly digs into that mystery, if only to finally let viewers move on.

Between the cliffhangers and delayed return, fans have plenty of pent-up questions — though, after this break, you do wonder how much patience everyone’s got left. Just as well the main cast is all still showing up: Kaitlin Olson, Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb, and Judy Reyes all return, with presumably more guest stars skulking around.
