Yes, it’s about the cars — Michelle Rodriguez isn’t happy with one F9 decision
If you weren’t sold on F9’s big swing, Michelle Rodriguez is with you — dropping an ‘it has to do with cars’ jab at the franchise’s new direction.
If you thought sending the Fast & Furious crew into space was a bit much, you’re not alone—Michelle Rodriguez absolutely agrees with you. As someone who’s been there since the franchise’s first questionable tank-top moment, Rodriguez has finally put her foot down about where these films have ended up, and she didn’t mince words on the red carpet for the 25th anniversary of The Fast and The Furious.
Rodriguez told The Hollywood Reporter at the anniversary event: "My big hope, if I have any wish, for the last one, is that they bring it back to the community. Because that community’s kept us alive for 25 years. It’s a global community, and it has to do with cars, man! Not this 007, bring your cars to space sh—. Let's get back to what it all started as, you know. An article in the paper about the racing. Let’s go back there."
F9: Fast & the Furious in Orbit
Just when you thought these films couldn’t possibly top dragging bank vaults through city streets, F9 decided to blast into orbit. It was divisive at best—and it turns out some of the stars weren’t thrilled with the rocket-fuelled direction either. Rodriguez’s criticisms echo a lot of what older fans have been saying for years: shouldn’t the action revolve around racing and a dodgy DVD player heist, not spy gadgets and spaceships? It sounds mad when you say it out loud, but here we are.
Fast Forever: The Last Ride
If you’ve lost track, the final film in the main series will be Fast Forever, the 11th entry (yes, eleven, let it sink in). Vin Diesel revealed on the same red carpet that filming is set to kick off this December—though apparently, that’s only if he can keep the studio suits off his back long enough to start rolling. The script, according to Diesel, was no easy feat either. Four sets of writers and four years of development later, Diesel says he finally landed on something worthy of the endpoint. In fact, he admitted he got a bit teary when he read it through recently.
At the anniversary screening, Diesel shared with Variety: "We start shooting in December, if I can make good on the request from the studio. I’m in a good place, though. I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get to something that I felt would be worthy of a finale. And when I read the script a couple of weeks ago, [I cried.]"
Expectations are that Fast Forever will drop in March 2028, which gives them plenty of time to resist the temptation of strapping rockets to family barbecues this time around.
- Fast Forever is slated as the series finale, with filming beginning in December 2026 and release set for March 2028.
