Will Trent just dropped its most devastating twist: Amanda Wagner dies in Season 4 Episode 15, and showrunners Liz Heldens, Daniel T. Thomsen, and Karine Rosenthal say the fallout will reset the team.

Well, if you thought 'Will Trent' was playing it safe, Season 4 just proved otherwise. The most recent episode went out with a literal stab to the heart—specifically, the heart of Amanda Wagner, played by Sonja Sohn. If you’re rattled, you’re not alone: even the showrunners admit pulling the trigger on Amanda was a pretty big deal, and they’re not exactly heartless about it.

The Big Good-bye

So here’s the lowdown. In the Season 4 finale, Amanda teams up with the FBI to take down a shadowy figure known only as the Commander. She’s tracking some dodgy dealings involving Adelaide Trevens (Mallory Jansen), but, in true TV fashion, things go sideways. An unknown attacker finds Amanda first—and that’s curtains for the GBI chief. Yes, she’s really dead.

Why Kill Amanda? (And Why Now?)

According to co-showrunner Karine Rosenthal, Amanda’s death wasn’t just for shock value (though, let’s be honest, it lands with a thud). The whole point was to shake up the dynamics for pretty much everyone at the GBI—especially Will.

'Amanda has been the character who has protected Will for as long as she has known him. So this gives us the opportunity for a completely new dynamic in the GBI, because her replacement will not have that same relationship with Will. Her death had the most impact on the most amount of characters.'

That’s another way of saying: 'We just upended the entire show and, honestly, it’ll be a totally different vibe in Season 5.' Losing Amanda is meant to spin the characters into some painful (but also story-fueling) chaos.

This Wasn’t Their First Attempt

One weird behind-the-scenes tidbit: according to Liz Heldens, the writers had already considered killing off Amanda back in Season 3, when she had a close call. But nobody, not even the people running the show, could actually go through with it back then. 'I don’t think we were ready, honestly,' Heldens admitted. Now, though, apparently the time felt right—or at least, they finally steeled themselves enough to go there.

Is Amanda Really Gone?

Now, if you’re worried you’ve really seen the last of Sonja Sohn, don’t panic just yet. As anyone who’s watched this series knows, Will sees and talks to characters who’ve already died. (It’s just a thing he does. Therapy-by-ghost, basically.) The showrunners made it clear that this particular door isn’t slammed shut. If Will needs Amanda’s ghost to work through his next emotional train wreck, don’t be shocked if you see her pop back up.
