Why is Maggie with Negan in The Walking Dead: Dead City?

Negan beat Maggie's husband Glenn to death with a barbed-wire baseball bat and made her watch. Years later, the two of them are sharing a boat to Manhattan.

It isn't forgiveness. It's leverage — and the terms are very specific.

The short answer

Maggie needs Negan because he's the only person alive who understands the man who took her son. In season 1, Hershel (Logan Kim) is kidnapped by the Croat (Željko Ivanek), a former Savior lieutenant who served under Negan and now runs a gang on a walled-off Manhattan. Negan can read him. Nobody else can. That's the entire basis of the alliance.

The deal they struck

Season 1 lays the terms out plainly:

  • What Maggie wants — Hershel back from the Croat, alive and off the island.
  • What Negan wants — shelter for Ginny (Mahina Napoleon), his orphaned young ward, plus cover from New Babylon Marshal Perlie Armstrong (Gaius Charles), who's hunting him for killing five men who attacked his wife Annie.
  • What neither of them mentions — Glenn. The arrangement functions precisely because the past stays closed.
  • How it collapses — Maggie hands Negan to the Croat anyway, once she realises he'd quietly planned to trade himself for Hershel behind her back.

Where season 2 left them

Season 2 kept the pair apart for most of its eight episodes. The Dama (Lisa Emery), Manhattan's power broker, gave Maggie a single instruction — kill Negan — and even Hershel urged her to take the offer. Maggie stabbed him instead of finishing him, then saved his life once she understood he'd been protecting Ginny throughout.

Lauren Cohan summed up the shift in 2025:

"This dynamic that they're in is over."

The finale closed on a joint narrated monologue — not forgiveness, just an agreement to stop relitigating.

What season 3 does with them

Season 3 arrived on 26 July 2026 with an episode called "Trillium", running eight instalments through to the finale on 13 September. Seth Hoffman has taken over as showrunner from Eli Jorné, and the premise is a straight reversal: Maggie and Negan working as partners to build the first proper community in post-apocalypse Manhattan, with Aimee Garcia joining as a survivor named Renata.

AMC has confirmed the feud reaches a resolution this season.

For the record: Dead City is set five to six years after the main series wrapped up — long enough that Hershel is old enough to pick his own side. He's picked the Dama. Maggie's problem in season 3 isn't Negan any more.
