Cristina Yang was there from the very first episode in 2005: the sharpest of the five original interns, the character who earned Sandra Oh five Emmy nominations, and Meredith Grey's "person". Then, at the end of season 10, she was gone.

There was no scandal or contract dispute. Oh has explained the decision repeatedly, and her account has never changed.

The decision, in her own words

Oh announced her exit in August 2013, telling The Hollywood Reporter she felt creatively complete after a decade in the role — that she'd given it her all.

"Cristina wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go," she told The Hollywood Reporter in 2013.

The interesting detail is the timeline.

Oh signed a two-year contract extension in May 2012 and started preparing to leave the moment the ink dried — she gave herself those two years to let go of the character emotionally. When Shonda Rhimes asked for her thoughts at the end of season 9, Oh's answer was that she was ready. She broke the news to her castmates at the table read for the show's 200th episode.

How Yang left the show

Rhimes told THR the exit story would be about Cristina's growth rather than her departure, and that's what aired. In the season 10 finale in May 2014, Cristina takes over the Klausman Institute in Zurich — handed to her by her old flame Preston Burke — becoming director of her own cardiothoracic research centre rather than dying, crashing, or drowning like so many Grey's alumni.

Her goodbye to Meredith included one final piece of advice about Derek: "You are a gifted surgeon with an extraordinary mind."

And then the two of them danced it out, one last time.

Has she ever come back?

Not on screen. Cristina has been mentioned regularly — Meredith refers to their texts, and in a November 2019 episode Cristina sent a letter of testimony for Meredith's medical licence hearing — but Oh has never filmed a return.

Her position has stayed consistent. She told the Los Angeles Times in 2021 that in her mind the show was long gone, even if it remained alive for everyone else.

For the 20th anniversary in March 2025, she told Entertainment Weekly, "I knew in my gut that I had done as much as I could" — while adding she's happy for the writers to use the character however they see fit.

For the record: those five Emmy nominations for playing Cristina Yang never converted into a win.
