Why did Rollins leave SVU? The exit wasn't Kelli Giddish's idea
Amanda Rollins walked out of the squad room midway through season 24, in an episode that aired on 8 December 2022 — newly married, happy, and off to a teaching job at Fordham University. It was a tidy send-off for a character who'd been there since season 13.
The story behind it was far less tidy. Kelli Giddish didn't choose to go.
The decision came from above
When Giddish announced in August 2022 that season 24 would be her last, Variety reported that the exit wasn't her idea — and it wasn't new showrunner David Graziano's either. The call came from higher up, with sources pointing to salary negotiations and a broader push to refresh the long-running series. Mariska Hargitay, star and executive producer, reportedly fought alongside at least one other producer to keep her, and lost. The compromise: Rollins would leave mid-season rather than straight away.
Giddish addressed it directly on Instagram:
"Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life," she wrote in August 2022, confirming season 24 would be her last.
Former showrunner Warren Leight called writing for her "an unmitigated joy" in his own Instagram post that week.
How Rollins left the show
The writers gave her a soft landing rather than a body bag. In episode 9 of season 24, Rollins married ADA Sonny Carisi (Peter Scanavino) and handed in her badge for a criminology teaching post at Fordham. No tragedy, no scandal — just a door left deliberately ajar.

That mattered, because she kept walking back through it.
The slow road back
- Season 24 finale — Giddish returned as a guest before the season was even done.
- Season 25 (2024) — two guest appearances, with Rollins consulting on cases.
- Season 26 (2024–25) — five episodes in a recurring role, with Rollins bored of teaching, back in the NYPD, and promoted to sergeant in the Intelligence section.
- Season 27 (2025–26) — in May 2025, Deadline broke the news fans had waited two and a half years for: Giddish was returning as a full series regular, for her 15th season overall.
What changed at the show
Quite a lot, as it happens. Graziano departed, and Michele Fazekas took over as the first female showrunner in the programme's history for season 27. Hargitay — who had campaigned openly for Giddish's full-time return — finally got her wish, with Rollins back in the squad room alongside Benson and Carisi.
For the record: SVU returns for season 28 on 8 October 2026, with Giddish still on the call sheet. The exit was ordered from above. So, in the end, was the reversal.
