Why did Reid leave Criminal Minds? Fans got two different explanations
Matthew Gray Gubler played Dr Spencer Reid across all 15 seasons of Criminal Minds, from 2005 to 2020. When the show returned as Criminal Minds: Evolution on Paramount+ in November 2022, the BAU's genius was nowhere to be seen — and over the following years, fans were given two quite different accounts of why.
Explanation one: the show's version
On screen, Reid was never written out — he was parked. Evolution's first season established that Reid and fellow agent Matt Simmons were away on a confidential assignment, which conveniently required no further detail and no screen time. Technically, per showrunner Erica Messer, he remained a member of the BAU throughout. Just one who never appeared.
Explanation two: the one from the people who make it
Off screen, the accounts split.
- The official line — Messer has consistently said the issue was scheduling: Gubler's calendar and Evolution's production windows simply didn't line up.
- The co-star's version — Paget Brewster, who plays Emily Prentiss, offered a fuller picture: Criminal Minds was Gubler's first job out of university, he'd spent 15 years on it, and he wanted to try other projects and directing rather than sign straight back up.
The two aren't contradictory, exactly. One is a logistics answer, the other a career answer. Fans noticed they weren't the same answer.
The cameo that finally happened
The timetables aligned once. In Evolution's third season — episode 3, "Time to Say Goodbye", broadcast on 22 May 2025 — Reid turned up unannounced at the funeral of JJ's husband Will LaMontagne Jr, sat with Emily, Penelope, and Rossi, and spoke exactly one line to his grieving friend: "I'm always here for you guys." The episode even supplied its own logistics: Reid's supervisor knew JJ from the state department and gave him the morning off.
Plenty of viewers found a single line an odd return after three years of waiting. A.J. Cook, who plays JJ, defended the choice to TV Insider in 2025:
"It's all in looks," she said, arguing Reid didn't need a monologue.
Will he be back?
Not soon. Messer confirmed in May 2026 that no original-series characters return in Evolution's next season, citing the compressed nature of a 10-episode run. Gubler, meanwhile, has his own CBS drama, Einstein, arriving in the 2026–27 season.
So the current tally stands: 15 seasons, one confidential assignment, one funeral, one line.
