At the end of season 7 in 2005, Eric Forman announced he was off to Africa to teach English for a year — and That '70s Show spent its entire final season without its main character. On screen, it was a gap year. Off screen, it was something else entirely.

The real reason

Topher Grace wanted a film career, and the sitcom's demanding schedule was in the way. He'd already been dabbling — a small role in Steven Soderbergh's Traffic in 2000, then proper leading-man turns in Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! and In Good Company, both in 2004. Press reports at the time framed his exit plainly as a move to focus on his growing film career, and after seven seasons as Point Place's resident smart alec, he walked.

The Africa storyline was the writers' patch job: a reason for Eric to be gone that didn't kill him off and left the door open for a return.

The Spider-Man connection

Here's what the gap year was really covering for. Almost immediately after Grace's final episode aired, Sam Raimi announced he'd cast him in Spider-Man 3 — as Eddie Brock, aka Venom. The film landed in summer 2007 and reigned as the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie until Far From Home overtook it in 2019.

So while Eric was supposedly teaching in Africa, the actor playing him was fighting Tobey Maguire in the biggest superhero film of its day.

What season 8 looked like without him

Rough, frankly:

  • Randy Pearson (Josh Meyers) — the new guy drafted into the gang, and one of the least popular additions in the show's run.
  • Kelso mostly gone too — Ashton Kutcher appeared in only a handful of early season 8 episodes before leaving for his own film commitments.
  • Donna, Red, and Kitty — left to carry the basement until the series ended in May 2006, after eight seasons on Fox.

Did Eric ever come back?

Twice. Grace returned, uncredited, for the series finale — Eric arrives home from Africa on New Year's Eve 1979 and reunites with Donna. And in 2023 he reprised the role in Netflix's That '90s Show, playing dad to daughter Leia, with Laura Prepon back as Donna.
