Ben Miller was the original detective of Death in Paradise — the suit-and-tie, briefcase-clutching DI Richard Poole, gloriously miserable in the Caribbean sunshine from the show's launch in 2011. Then, at the start of series 3 in January 2014, the show killed him off with an ice pick.

The decision to go wasn't the BBC's. It was Miller's — and the reason was 4,000 miles away.

The phone call that changed everything

Filming Death in Paradise means roughly six months a year on Guadeloupe, the French island that stands in for fictional Saint Marie. Shortly after Miller arrived for a shoot, his partner Jessica Parker — whom he married in 2013 — rang with news: she was pregnant. And because of the pregnancy, she couldn't fly out to visit him for the entire six-month block.

Miller, recently divorced and newly settled, suddenly found himself expecting a baby on the other side of the world from it. He called it a proper curveball. His conclusion was blunt:

"I knew what I had to do to get my wife back," he said in an interview reported by Entertainment Daily — quit Death in Paradise.

Why Poole had to die

Rather than post Poole back to London, the writers gave the show its most shocking cold open: Richard Poole murdered at a university reunion party, ice pick to the chest, with his successor Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) flown in to solve the killing. Brutal — but it instantly established that no lead was safe, which became the show's superpower.

The revolving door he started

Miller's exit created the template Death in Paradise has followed ever since. The detective's chair has now been filled five times:

  • Ben Miller — DI Richard Poole, 2011–2014.
  • Kris Marshall — DI Humphrey Goodman, 2014–2017.
  • Ardal O'Hanlon — DI Jack Mooney, 2017–2020.
  • Ralf Little — DI Neville Parker, 2020–2024, the longest-serving of the lot.
  • Don Gilet — DI Mervin Wilson, from the 2024 Christmas special onwards.

Did he ever come back?

He did — twice over, in a way. Miller returned as the ghost of Richard Poole for the show's 10th anniversary series in 2021, driving straight to set the moment he landed on Guadeloupe. And the family he quit for grew: he and Parker have two children together.
