Ben Merrick — college-age son of Anna Merrick — disappears in the opening stretch of Reacher season 4, which arrived on Prime Video with three episodes on 12 August 2026. For three episodes the show won't confirm whether he's alive.

Episode 4 confirms he isn't. Episode 5 names the people responsible: Lila Hoth and her mother Amisha. Ben's throat was cut with a karambit, the curved Indonesian blade also used on Mary Ellen Daniels — and the same weapon the two women produce from their pockets when four armed men corner them in a hotel room.

What episode 5 shows

"Bridge", released on 26 August 2026, takes Reacher and Detective Tamara Green to the restaurant where Ben was held. Blood dried on the floor. Torn restraints. Reacher reconstructs it out loud: Ben broke one restraint, unlatched the rest, ran for the door, and they cut his throat before he made it.

Lila walks in mid-scene to demand the flash drive, with Amisha holding Jacob Merrick as leverage. Her version is that Ben gave her no choice.

Why they took him at all

Ben was never the target. He was pressure applied to his mother.

  • The job — Anna, a Pentagon employee, was forced to steal a flash drive.
  • The deadline — she missed it in traffic south of Philadelphia, abandoned her car, and finished the trip by train from Tasker-Morris.
  • The proof — Ben was already dead by then, which is what explains her behaviour on the subway in episode 1.

The book settled it in 2009

Season 4 adapts Gone Tomorrow, Lee Child's 13th Reacher novel, published in 2009. The names changed for television and the setting moved from New York to Philadelphia, but the roles map cleanly:

  • Susan Mark → Anna Merrick, the Pentagon clerk on the subway.
  • Peter Molina → Ben Merrick, the son taken as leverage.
  • Svetlana Hoth → Amisha, the older woman presented as Lila's mother.
  • Jake Mark → Jacob Merrick, Anna's brother.

In the novel, Lila and Svetlana are neither mother and daughter nor the wealthy Ukrainians they claim to be. They torture and kill Peter after Susan misses a midnight deadline, then send her the footage — which is why she boards the train armed and does what she does. Reacher tracks the pair to a hotel and kills them both in a knife fight that puts him in hospital.

Three episodes left. The finale drops on 16 September 2026, the same day Prime Video releases all eight episodes of the Neagley spin-off.
