If you've started Dead City season 3, which premiered on AMC on 26 July 2026, you may have noticed a name coming up in conversation belonging to someone who never appears. Negan reacts badly whenever it does. Here's who she was.

The short answer

Ginny, played by Mahina Anne Marie Napoleon, is the orphaned girl Negan takes in before the events of season 1 — a child left selectively mute by trauma, whom he protects across two seasons. She's also the daughter of a man Negan killed. She died in the season 2 finale on 22 June 2025 and does not appear in season 3.

How she met Negan

Ginny was living on a farm within the New Babylon Federation after her father's death. What she witnessed — going out after dark to look for him and finding him reanimated, clearly killed by a person rather than a walker — left her unable to speak. Negan, working on the same farm, took an interest and looked after her. When marshals arrived hunting him on a murder charge, Ginny asked to go with him.

The detail he withheld: Negan was the one who killed her father, along with four other men, after they beat and robbed his wife Annie. Taking care of Ginny was his way of settling the account. He told her he was wanted for robbing a wagon train.

Napoleon described the imbalance to AMC in 2023:

"Ginny only knows Negan as her protector," she said, adding that the girl has no idea how dangerous other people consider him.

What happens across the two seasons

  • Season 1 — Negan agrees to help Maggie retrieve her son Hershel from Manhattan on the condition that Ginny gets a home at the Bricks. She doesn't settle, and follows him to New York instead. She speaks her first words in the finale before he sends her back.
  • Season 2 — she can talk again, and she knows the truth about her father. Grieving and furious, she volunteers for the New Babylon Army with the intention of killing him.
  • The injury — during a walker fight in episode 5, she's impaled. Not bitten — impaled. She hides the wound and it becomes infected.
  • The finale — she collapses mid-confrontation. Negan fights through a walker-filled hospital for supplies, hooks her up to a machine, and then leaves her alone to face Bruegel's assault. He returns to find she's died and reanimated. Maggie hands him her blade.

He does it himself.

Is she in season 3?

No. Napoleon exited as a series regular after the season 2 finale. Season 3, running eight episodes to 13 September 2026 under new showrunner Seth Hoffman, brings in Aimee Garcia as a new character called Renata while Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Logan Kim, Gaius Charles, and Željko Ivanek continue.

For the record: Negan has now lost two people this way, both of them by his own hand — his wife Lucille at the very start of the outbreak, and the girl he took in to make up for a murder.
