Who dies in The Hardacres season 2?
Six episodes, a Victorian flu epidemic, a blackmail plot and a card game with a house at stake — and the Hardacre family comes out of series 2 intact. The Channel 5 period drama aired in May 2026, two years after its first run, and for all the graveside atmosphere in the middle stretch, nobody in the main cast is buried.
The exits are of a different kind.
Sam's Russian flu, and how close it came
The big scare is Sam Hardacre (Liam McMahon), who collapses at the end of episode 2. Doctor Mason diagnoses Russian flu — the Asiatic flu of the 1889–1890 pandemic — and warns it is highly contagious and potentially fatal. Hardacre Hall goes into quarantine, the servants are sent home, and Mary (Claire Cooper) refuses to leave his bedside. Mrs Dryden, who nursed the previous owner through his final illness, stays to help.
The fever breaks in episode 3. Sam recovers fully and is back running the business by episode 4, though the scare pushes him to plan for a future he might not be in.
Who actually leaves
The departure everyone remembers is Joe. Here's the shortlist of everyone whose fate looked uncertain across series 2:
- Sam Hardacre — survives the Russian flu, resumes control of the newly converted general stores.
- Joe Hardacre (Adam Little) — alive and well, but emigrating to America with his wife Betsy and their baby after falling out with Sam over the business.
- Harry Hardacre (Zak Ford-Williams) — threatened with prosecution after Lady Imelda Hansen obtains a private letter, then saved by an engagement to Adella Fitzherbert; ends the series with an Oxford interview lined up.
- Arthur Lewis (Edward Mitchell) — Harry's tutor leaves Hardacre Hall voluntarily once the letter surfaces.
- Lady Imelda Hansen (Michele Dotrice) — thrown out by her own daughter, not killed off.
Imelda's downfall
The villain gets a comeuppance rather than a corpse. Having duped Ma into a bridge wager, Imelda discovers Ma staked the deeds to the family's other, far less grand Yorkshire house — one whose lodgers hold a protected tenancy for life. She then tries the letter instead, threatening the magistrate. Emma Fitzherbert (Cathy Belton) finally turns on her mother in the finale:
"You poisoned my life, and it ends now," Emma tells her in the series 2 finale.
Imelda leaves with the letter handed back to Harry and her dowry in tow.
Is there a series 3?
Not confirmed by Channel 5 as of July 2026, though the finale left threads dangling: Mary's school board election result, Joe's new life in the States, and Liza's obliviousness to Callum Saunders. Series 1 and 2 are both on Channel5.com.
For the record: the only on-screen death in the Hardacres' orbit belongs to a character who was already dead before series 1 began — Sir William Cavendish IV, the previous owner of the hall, who died of TB.
