Who are the Reds in Reacher? Fans built theories out of a single line in episode 3
A throwaway line in Reacher season 4, episode 3 convinced fans a new faction called the Reds had joined the conspiracy. Here's what the line actually refers to, and who is really after Jack.
Reacher season 4, which premiered on Prime Video on 12 August 2026 and runs weekly to its finale on 16 September, adapts Gone Tomorrow — Lee Child's 13th novel — and stacks up more factions than any previous season: the CIA, a congressman's private muscle, a second unidentified hit squad, and everyone in between, all chasing one missing USB drive. Into that pile-up, episode 3 dropped two words that sent a chunk of the audience theory-building: "the Reds".
The line itself
In "One Small Step" (released 12 August 2026), a team of CIA operatives is wiped out by a mysterious second squad whose allegiance nobody can place. Asked, in effect, who these new attackers might be, Reacher (Alan Ritchson) shrugs that he doesn't care —
"even if they're the '75 Cincinnati Reds."
Given how crowded the conspiracy board already was — undercover journalist Lila Hoth (Agnez Mo), political fixer Nolan Cahill, Congressman John Sampson (Marc Blucas), Philadelphia detectives Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel) and Docherty (Kevin Corrigan) — plenty of viewers read "the Reds" as a proper noun. Threads and comment sections filled with speculation about a hidden faction, with some fans adopting the nickname "the Big Red Machine" for the second squad.

What the line actually means
It's a baseball joke. The 1975 Cincinnati Reds — nicknamed the Big Red Machine — went 108–54 and won that year's World Series, and are routinely ranked among the best teams ever fielded. Reacher's point is that his new opponents could be operating at that level and he still wouldn't be impressed. There is no organisation called the Reds in season 4: the sarcasm is the whole content of the line.
It also fits the character as the show has built him. Ritchson told TV Insider on the Toronto set:
"One of my favorite things about Reacher is how fallible he is,"
pointing to Reacher's habit of misreading a case despite meticulous planning — which is precisely what episode 3 delivers, when Lila's cover story about searching for her father collapses.
Who is actually hunting Reacher, then?
As of episode 4, "Karambits and Pieces" (19 August 2026), the season has confirmed this much: Sampson's team was in Indonesia under the cover of malaria research, training local military personnel including a General Putra, and Lila is in fact a journalist investigating the torture and killing of protesters by that military — with a survivor of it, Amisha (Anggun), in tow. The second squad's employer remains open going into the finale, and the show has form for saving that answer for last.
For what it's worth, the season relocated the book's action from New York to Philadelphia, opens with a train encounter with a troubled woman named Anna Merrick rather than the novel's subway scene, and was renewed for a fifth season in May 2026 — before this one even aired. The actual Big Red Machine, meanwhile, last posed a threat to anyone in 1976.
