Reacher just ended an episode with all four heroes at gunpoint and no escape route written for them

Warning — spoilers ahead for Reacher Season 4, Episode 6, so look away now if you're not up to date. Right, let's get into it. The Prime Video series has never shied away from the odd dark twist, but it usually keeps things moving with big brawls, car chases, and the satisfaction of seeing Alan Ritchson flatten a few bad guys. This time, though, with Season 4 based on Lee Child's Gone Tomorrow, the show has decided to lean much further into the doom and gloom.

This season already came pre-loaded with a shake-up: there's no love subplot for Reacher, the case itself isn't tied to his backstory, and the wisecracking is noticeably thinner on the ground. But the real curveball appears at the back end of Episode 6, 'Plum Out of Luck', which pushes the series into much bleaker territory than we've seen before.

Reacher Season 4 entered the scene in 2024, but Episode 6 marks the show's most hopeless cliffhanger yet, with all four major heroes facing very real and immediate threats.

The Bleakest Cliffhanger Yet

Up to now, even when things looked rough for the team, you never seriously worried about anyone meeting their end — not in the middle of a season. There was always some last-second escape, rooftop leap, or backup on the way. But this time, when Episode 6 cuts to credits, it leaves pretty much everyone hanging by a thread. For a show that normally saves this sort of drama for the finale, it's properly bold — and honestly, a bit disconcerting.

The title, 'Plum Out of Luck', isn't just a pun on Russell Plum being shot. It turns into a grim summary for the whole squad. The heroes all close out Episode 6 with their fates up in the air:

• Reacher and Tamara (Sydelle Noel) are literally shackled in the back of a van in some remote spot, guns pointed at them, nowhere to go.
• Jacob (Christopher Rodriquez Marquette) is being threatened with execution by Detective Docherty (Kevin Corrigan) — though that one's a bit ambiguous, you start to wonder if it's an actual threat or just a head game.
• Plum (Kevin Weisman) gets carted off to hospital with a gunshot wound, and while he's out of commission, it would be deeply unsatisfying to lose him off-screen. Odds are good he'll make a comeback.

No Plot Armour Here — Well, Almost

The real shock, if you're keeping score, is just how little hope there is for any escape — especially for Reacher and Tamara. We know Reacher the character is invincible (if he bought it, the series would collapse, and Amazon has already greenlit Season 5, plus Ritchson is lined up for a Neagley spin-off). But despite that, the show is happy to let things look as desperate as possible, which is new territory. The writers haven't left their hero the usual set of sneaky options; one moment Tamara and Reacher are caught and the next they're practically lined up for a firing squad. Maybe Jacob might talk his way out of it, perhaps Docherty is messing about for dramatic effect, but for Reacher and Tamara, you're left hanging with absolutely no hint of rescue.
