What year does The Walking Dead: Dead City take place? Even Negan's own maths on screen doesn't add up
The Walking Dead: Dead City has never put a date on screen, and the official answers don't agree with each other. Every timeline clue on record — Negan's own line in season 1, the producers' conflicting statements, and the one detail that actually settles the year — examined side by side.
AMC has never stamped a date on Dead City, and the people who make it have supplied at least four different answers — several of them incompatible. Even Negan takes a run at the arithmetic in season 1, and his figures don't survive contact with the parent show. Here's every clue on record, as of September 2026, with season 3 currently airing.
The one fixed point
The franchise's outbreak date is 24 August 2010, established in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. The main series ends roughly 12 to 13 years later — about 2022–23 in-universe — after its various time jumps. Everything about Dead City has to be measured from there.

Four official answers that disagree
- Negan, on screen — in season 1, episode 3, he says he ran the Saviors "12, 15 years ago". He lost the Savior war around year 3 of the apocalypse, so his upper estimate would park Dead City near year 18 — roughly 2028.
- Jeffrey Dean Morgan — told Deadline in 2023 the series is set "a couple of years after" the main show's finale. That's about year 14, or 2024.
- Lauren Cohan — put it at five to six years after the finale in a June 2023 interview. Year 17 or 18.
- AMC's Dan McDermott — said Manhattan's bridges were blown and the island left overrun for 12 years. That would make Dead City simultaneous with the finale, which is impossible: Maggie's Hilltop scenes clearly happen well after it.
Four sources, a spread of about six in-universe years. Not ideal for a franchise.
The clue that actually dates Dead City
Hershel Rhee. Maggie's son first appears as an ultrasound in season 6 and is born in the season 9 premiere — around year 2 of the apocalypse. In Dead City he's a teenager, recast from Kien Michael Spiller to Logan Kim, and reads as roughly 13 to 15 years old. That puts season 1 at approximately year 15 — call it 2025 to 2027. Season 2 adds one more marker: Negan states a year has passed since season 1, nudging things to year 16.
The working answer
Around 2026, give or take a year — 15 to 16 years into the apocalypse. It squares with Hershel's age, sits inside Negan's "12, 15" window, and splits the difference between the two lead actors' estimates. The McDermott version simply has to be discarded.
For the record: season 3 — which premiered on 26 July 2026 under new showrunner Seth Hoffman and wraps on 13 September — has so far declined to settle the question with anything as reckless as an on-screen date.
