John Cena says his Peacemaker return 'could be never', and season 3 isn't in development
John Cena’s just handed you a not-exactly-reassuring update on his DCU future as Peacemaker, speaking to ScreenRant at the Coyote vs. ACME premiere.
Right, here we go—fresh uncertainty for fans of Peacemaker, and it’s not the kind of “will they, won’t they” that gets the heart racing. This time, John Cena himself has put the brakes on any real hype for a comeback, and honestly, the outlook’s as clear as mud.
John Cena Casts Doubt
While working the red carpet for the Coyote vs. ACME launch, Cena was cornered by ScreenRant about when we might expect to see him wear Peacemaker’s daft helmet again. What he actually gave us, though, was the polar opposite of a crowd-pleaser.
Here’s how Cena summed things up in the interview:
When asked when he’d next appear in the DCU, Cena replied, ‘He [James Gunn] does. And that could be never, but he knows. He knows.’
No date, no plans, just a flat-out “could be never.” Classic tease or genuine warning—hard to say, but either way, it’s not the confidence boost fans might’ve hoped for.
Series Status: Nowhere Fast
Now, to muddy things further, word is there’s no Season 3 of Peacemaker planned at all for the moment. That doesn’t mean the show’s been axed by HBO Max, but there’s no movement behind the scenes to continue Chris Smith’s madcap adventures. Still, the door’s technically open for James Gunn—if he fancies dusting the thing off further down the line.
Peacemaker’s third series isn’t in development, and there’s been no official cancellation, leaving its future hanging in limbo.
There’s also a vague possibility we see Peacemaker crop up in another DCU project, namely Man of Tomorrow, which is supposed to land next year. After the unhinged mess that was Season 2’s finale, though, the character’s fate is about as settled as a pint in an earthquake.
- Rick Flag Sr. had Chris grabbed by A.R.G.U.S, then shoved through an interdimensional portal to somewhere called Salvation.
- Flag’s big idea: turn Salvation into a metahuman lockup and strand Chris there as the inaugural resident.
- A final twist-stitch tied Flag into a plotline with none other than Lex Luthor.
The second season pretty much set up four different ways to continue, but—best guess—nobody’s actually writing anything at the moment. Even James Gunn managed to make things more confusing this week: when directly asked about Peacemaker Season 3, he responded online with a “thinking-face” emoji, which is neither a yes nor a no but does at least suggest he’s not ignoring the idea completely.
With Cena’s “could be never” ringing out and Gunn just lobbing cryptic emoji, the future for Peacemaker in the DCU is, bluntly, up in the air.
