Netflix’s Gears of War movie finally has a finished script — and it’s a Delta Squad origin story
Director David Leitch has finally delivered a meaty update on Netflix’s Gears of War movie — the sort of concrete milestone fans have been itching to hear about.
Well, after several years of radio silence, Netflix’s ambitious Gears of War movie has actually nudged forward — though don’t go clearing your schedule just yet. Based on the brutal, chainsaw-heavy shooter series from Epic Games, this film adaptation has been kicking around Hollywood’s wish list since 2022. There’s also an animated series on the cards, but that hasn’t made as much noise lately.
The Gears of War film now has an actual finished script, courtesy of Jon Spaihts and director David Leitch, as Leitch himself confirmed in a chat with ScreenRant — 'everybody's excited' but don’t expect things to move instantly.
Where Things Stand
Here’s where it gets a bit inside: after loads of rumblings, Jon Spaihts (yes, the Dune bloke) joined as screenwriter in 2023. Then last May (2025), David Leitch — who you’ll know from Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train — officially boarded as director. Leitch’s producing partner (and spouse), Kelly McCormick, is also in the mix. By August last year, they’d confirmed they were scripting alongside Spaihts. It’s taken ages, but at least the writing phase is now ticked off.
The Gears universe is also rumbling back into life elsewhere: with the sixth main game in the series, E-Day, right around the corner, Leitch hinted Netflix’s adaptation could lead to a bigger film universe. The man’s keen, as you’d expect for such a chunky IP, though he admitted he couldn't spill much else.
Story and Release
So, what do we actually know about the plot? Back in June 2026, a few fresh details trickled out: the movie will revolve around the formation of Delta Squad — think the original game’s ragtag crew of grizzled soldiers — thrown into a last-ditch fight against the Locust (those underground monsters bent on wiping out humanity). In other words, we’re looking at the origin story angle rather than something halfway through the games’ convoluted timeline. Frankly, that’s the smart play.
No release date’s been set for the Gears of War movie — unsurprisingly, given the stop-start development merry-go-round so far.

- Film adaptation rumoured since 2022, confirmed with Netflix involvement the same year.
