What is The Westies about? The real gang was scarier than the show
The Westies is MGM+'s eight-part crime drama that premiered on 12 July 2026, with the finale landing on 23 August. It comes from Chris Brancato — the co-creator of Narcos and Godfather of Harlem — and Michael Panes, and it stars an Oscar winner as an Irish mob boss. And unlike most gangster shows, the outfit at its centre actually existed.
The show
Set in early-1980s Hell's Kitchen, the series follows the Westies, a small Irish-American gang, as construction begins on the Jacob Javits Convention Center — right on their turf, with millions in graft up for grabs. Despite being outnumbered roughly fifty-to-one by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the gang's brutality has bought them a fragile truce with the Italians, one now threatened by a generational rift within the crew and a deepening FBI investigation.
J.K. Simmons plays boss Eamon Sweeney, with Titus Welliver as an NYPD officer torn between the badge and the neighbourhood he grew up in, plus Tom Brittney, Sarah Bolger, and Allen Leech. Simmons sets the tone in the trailer:
"We've got to send the message. Stay out of Hell's Kitchen," Sweeney warns.
Most characters are fictional composites of real figures — with one notable exception: John Gotti, played by Hamish Allan-Headley, appears as himself.
The real Westies
Here's the thing — the real crew never called themselves the Westies. The name came from police and the press. And the history is arguably wilder than the drama:
- Tiny numbers, huge reach — estimates put the gang at just 20 to 60 members, yet they controlled rackets on the docks and union operations at Madison Square Garden and the New York Coliseum.
- A bloody succession — longtime boss Mickey Spillane was murdered in 1977, gunned down by a hitman linked to a rival crime family, clearing the way for the far more violent Jimmy Coonan.
- A fearsome reputation — the gang became notorious for making bodies disappear entirely, a practice chronicled in T.J. English's definitive 1990 book The Westies.
- The fall — gang member Mickey Featherstone turned witness, and RICO prosecutions followed. In 1988, Coonan was sentenced to 75 years; he's due for release in 2030.

The season finale wraps the story while leaving the door open, though no second season has been announced as of August 2026. If you want the gang on film in the meantime, 1990's State of Grace — with Sean Penn, Ed Harris, and Gary Oldman — covers similar ground.
