What is Fergus's mother up to in Harry Wild? Paula's track record gives him every reason to worry
Fergus Reid spent three seasons of Harry Wild finally getting an adult who reliably shows up — even if that adult is a retired literature professor he once mugged. Then his actual mother walked back into the picture.
Here's who Paula Kenny is, what she's doing in season 5, and why Fergus keeps one eye on the door.
Who is Paula Kenny?
Paula is played by Samantha Mumba — yes, the Dublin pop star turned actress — and first appeared in season 3 in 2024. She's the mother who walked out on Fergus (Rohan Nedd) about five years before the series began, leaving a teenager to look after his younger sister Liberty with only his less-than-upstanding father, Malky Reid, in the background. His grandmother, the one steady adult he had left, has since died.
The track record
- The walkout — Paula left when Fergus was around 11 or 12, and he spent most of his teens without her.
- The return — she resurfaced in season 3 with no warning, and stayed in the picture through season 4, which aired from 5 May to 2 June 2025.
- The company — she came back into a household where Malky's income has historically been, to put it kindly, informal.
Nedd has been direct about what that history did to his character.
"There's a deep-seated fear of someone walking out on him again," he told Collider ahead of season 4, adding that what frightens Fergus most is losing someone who finally made him feel looked after.
What she's up to in season 5
Season 5 — six episodes, airing weekly on Acorn TV from 22 June 2026 — has Paula settled back in Dublin and back with Malky, who tells anyone who'll listen that he's given up his dodgy sidelines for her, and that he's never been happier. Whether a reformed Malky is a stable foundation is tested rather severely in the finale, when he becomes the prime suspect in a murder he has no memory of committing, and Harry, Fergus, and Charlie have to work out who actually benefits from the death.
Does Fergus have reason to worry?
On the evidence, yes — though not necessarily about villainy. Paula's pattern isn't crime; it's leaving. The season 5 finale keeps her in place and keeps the family, improbably, intact.
As of the end of season 5, she's still there. For Paula, that already counts as a record.
