What happens to Cruz in Special Ops: Lioness?
Cruz Manuelos is the first Lioness the show ever puts in the field, and Taylor Sheridan has since run her through three separate operations across three seasons on Paramount+.
She comes out of all of them. Cruz is alive, still attached to Joe McNamara's team, and on screen right now in Lioness season 3, which premiered on 2 August 2026 and runs weekly to a finale on 20 September.
Season 1: the kitchen in Mallorca
Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) is a Force Recon Marine who enlisted to get away from an abusive relationship. Joe (Zoe Saldaña) recruits her to get close to Aaliyah Amrohi, as a route to Aaliyah's father, the financier Asmar Ali Amrohi.
It ends at Aaliyah's wedding weekend. Cruz goes to the kitchen for water, meets Asmar for the first time, and is then accused of being CIA by Aaliyah's fiancé, Ehsan. She kills both men, escapes to Joe's boat with the quick reaction force, and quits the programme in the finale, which aired on 3 September 2023. Joe tells her she changed history. Cruz tells her she changed oil prices.
Season 2: back in, and deeper
Cruz is absent from the opening episodes of season 2 — which premiered on 27 October 2024 under the shortened title Lioness — and viewers noticed. She returns in episode 5, "Shatter the Moon", now with Delta Force, assigned to shadow the new Lioness: Army helicopter pilot Josie Carrillo (Genesis Rodriguez), whose uncle runs the Los Tigres cartel.
The finale takes the pair into Iran:
- The crash — Josie's helicopter is shot down inside Iranian territory.
- The fight — the team holds a position on the ground. Tex is shot in the abdomen, Tucker in the leg, Bobby is grazed across the face, and Josie's leg is broken.
- The extraction — close air support arrives, Joe gets Cruz and Josie out, and the whole team lives.
Season 3: where she is now
Cruz stayed on. Season 3 pairs her with extraction specialist Kyle McManus, and by episode 3, "The Bear Is Infected", released on 16 August 2026, senior CIA officials have started treating her as an operator in her own right rather than an asset to be spent. Eight episodes, Sundays. No fourth season has been announced.
For the record: her first season was billed as Special Ops: Lioness. The show dropped the first two words from season 2 onwards, which is why the search results are split down the middle.
