What happens at the end of Toy Story 5? The toys-vs-tech twist nobody expected
Pixar set up the most obvious showdown imaginable — beloved toys versus an evil tablet — and then refused to play it that way. Released on 19 June 2026, Toy Story 5 ends not with nostalgia beating technology, but with the two joining forces. Here's exactly how it plays out. Spoilers, obviously.
The setup
This is Jessie's film. With Woody (Tom Hanks) off rescuing lost toys with Bo Peep, Jessie (Joan Cusack) runs Bonnie's room — until Bonnie gets Lilypad (Greta Lee), a frog-shaped tablet that swallows her free time and pulls her into a world of group chats, peer pressure, and cyberbullying.
When kids mock Bonnie for "still playing with toys", Jessie and Bullseye get lost and are "returned" to the house of Emily — Jessie's first owner, the one who abandoned her.
The lunchbox reveal
At her lowest, Jessie returns to the old tyre swing where Emily used to play with her — and digs up a buried lunchbox. Inside: photos of an adult Emily with her daughter. The daughter's name is Jessie. Emily never forgot her. Thirty years after Toy Story 2 framed Emily as the villain of Jessie's story, the film quietly redeems her.
The twist: tech isn't the villain
Lilypad genuinely wants to help Bonnie — she's just terrible at it. When her matchmaking gets Bonnie bullied, she tries to banish herself in shame, and it's Jessie who convinces her to stay.
Together with Blaze's neglected old gadgets — potty trainer Smarty Pants (Conan O'Brien), GPS unit Atlas (Craig Robinson), and digital camera Snappy — they engineer a meeting between Bonnie and Blaze (Mykal-Michelle Harris), the toy-loving girl now living in Emily's old house. The two become instant friends.
Director Andrew Stanton — a franchise writer since 1995, directing a Toy Story film for the first time — told The National:
"And we realised pretty quickly, there's no easy answer."
How it all wraps up
- Buzz and Jessie — Buzz finally proposes after seven years of dithering, and Bonnie and Blaze stage a pretend toy wedding for them. Trixie dramatically objects mid-ceremony, because of course she does.
- Woody — leaves again, riding off with Bo Peep and Duke Caboom to keep rescuing abandoned toys.
- The Buzz army — a horde of stranded high-tech Buzz Lightyears each find a kid of their own in the mid-credits scene.
- Lilypad — fully accepted into the toy family, and now eyeing up the family Roomba romantically. Stay for the post-credits rap.
Is this really the end?
No. Stanton has confirmed active plans for a sixth and seventh film, calling this era "The Bonnie Trilogy" — three films before Bonnie outgrows her toys, just as Andy did. The toys aren't going anywhere.
