What happens at the end of The Night Manager season 2

The Night Manager returned in January 2026, a full decade after the original limited series. Tom Hiddleston is back as Jonathan Pine, now living under the alias Alex Goodwin as a low-level MI6 officer. Hugh Laurie returns as Richard Roper — who, despite apparently being killed at the end of season 1, turns out to be very much alive.

The setup

Season 2 takes Pine to Colombia. A sighting of an old Roper mercenary pulls him back into the field, where he discovers a new arms operation led by Colombian businessman Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva). Pine goes undercover again, aided by Roxana Bolaños (Camilla Morrone), a local businesswoman drawn reluctantly into the plot.

The ending

The season 2 finale is deliberately bleak. Roper's plan to destabilise Colombia succeeds. The arms deal goes through. Pine's efforts to stop it fail. Several key characters die in the process. The villains win.

The final scene reveals that Roper has returned to England and moved into a luxury home prepared for him by traitors inside British intelligence. Pine is left with nothing — no allies, no cover, and no clear path forward.

This is by design. Writer David Farr and the BBC/Amazon team ordered seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously, planning them as two halves of a single story. Season 2 is the middle act of a trilogy: the heroes lose, the stakes are raised, and everything is set up for a final confrontation.

Tom Hiddleston confirmed in January 2026 that season 3 is in active development. No release date has been set, but the gap will be far shorter than the decade between seasons 1 and 2.
