Craig Brewer's Song Sung Blue opened on 25 December 2025 with Hugh Jackman as Mike Sardina and Kate Hudson as his wife Claire — the Milwaukee couple behind Neil Diamond tribute act Lightning & Thunder. It's adapted from Greg Kohs's 2008 documentary of the same name.

Lightning & Thunder sell out a Milwaukee theatre on the same night Neil Diamond is playing an arena across town, and word arrives that Diamond wants to meet them afterwards. Mike has already blacked out before the show and split his head open on the bathroom sink, gluing the wound shut and playing anyway. On the drive to the frozen custard stand to meet Diamond, he passes out in the car and dies.

The real ending

Mike Sardina did fall and hit his head in 2006, but the sequence ran differently. Lightning & Thunder played their last gigs on 22 July 2006 — pre-game and post-game sets at a Madison Mallards baseball game. Mike went to hospital afterwards, doctors found bleeding on the brain, and he died on 27 July, five days later, at 55, having never regained consciousness after surgery.

He never met Neil Diamond. Claire did: Diamond watched Kohs's documentary in January 2008, approved the use of his music, and met her backstage at Milwaukee's Bradley Center on 24 November 2008, with front-row seats thrown in.

What else the film moved around

  • How they met — a mutual friend connected them in 1987, not a backstage introduction at the Wisconsin State Fair.
  • The Pearl Jam gig — Summerfest's Marcus Amphitheater on 7 July 1995, during the encore in front of roughly 23,000 people, rather than an opening slot at a theatre.
  • The comeback show — real, but not staged opposite a Diamond concert in town.
  • Claire's accident — accurate. A car mounted the kerb while she was gardening on 10 May 1999, costing her the lower part of her left leg.

The family's objection

Mike's children from an earlier relationship, Michael Sardina Jr. and Angelina, told the Daily Mail in December 2025 that they were each paid to consult and disliked the result. Mike Jr. says he was cut out of the film entirely despite being his father's only son, and has raised the possibility of legal action against the production and distribution companies.

"It's a beautiful story, but that's not how it went down," Angelina told the Daily Mail in December 2025.

Claire supports the film, along with her two children, Dayna and Rachel — Rachel consulted on Brewer's screenplay and supplied the hospital scene in which Mike tells her he thinks he's having a heart attack. Asked about the criticism by The Hollywood Reporter in January 2026, Hudson said she wasn't the right person to speak to it.

For the record: at the Milwaukee premiere in December 2025, Jackman and Brewer handed Claire an engraved bench honouring Lightning & Thunder.

It's now a permanent fixture at Wisconsin State Fair Park — the place where the couple actually got married, in 1994.
