What happens at the end of Fourth Wing?
Rebecca Yarros's Fourth Wing (2023), the book that ignited the romantasy boom, ends by detonating everything its heroine — and its reader — has been told for 400 pages.
Spoilers, obviously: the final "training exercise" is a death sentence, the monsters are real, and a dead man is waiting on the last page.
The trap at Athebyne
Violet Sorrengail, her squad, and the rebellion-marked riders are sent to the abandoned outpost at Athebyne for what's billed as a War Games exercise. It's nothing of the sort. Leadership has arranged for the marked ones — the children of the executed rebels, Xaden Riorson included — to die quietly beyond the wards.
Dain's habit of touching Violet's face turns out to be more than friendly: his signet lets him lift memories, and what he took helped convince leadership that her squad knew too much.
The truth Navarre buried
At Athebyne, the squad runs into the things Basgiath's classrooms call folklore: venin, dark wielders who drain magic straight from the earth, and wyvern, the dragon-like creatures they create. They are real, the war beyond Navarre's wards has never stopped, and the kingdom's leadership has spent centuries hiding it.
Xaden's other secret comes out in the same breath — the marked riders have been smuggling weapons to Poromiel to protect the civilians the wards abandon.
The battle costs dearly:
- Liam Mairi — Violet's bodyguard and the book's most loved side character, dies shielding her; his dragon Deigh follows him moments later.
- Violet — burns herself out taking down a wyvern and is carried away dying, saved only by a desperate flight to safety.
- The squad's faith in Navarre — every history lesson at Basgiath was a lie, and there's no unknowing it.
The final twist
Violet wakes days later in Aretia, the supposedly razed rebel city, healed by a mender who shouldn't exist: her brother Brennan, believed dead for six years, alive and running the revolution. The novel's last line belongs to him:
"Welcome to the revolution, Violet."
What comes next
Iron Flame (2023) picks up immediately afterwards, and Onyx Storm (2025) — which sold 2.7 million copies in its first week, the fastest-selling adult novel in two decades — continues the story. Two more books are planned to complete the five-book Empyrean series, and a TV adaptation is in development at Amazon MGM.
For the record: Violet bonded two dragons when everyone said one was impossible. By the end of book one, that's the least impossible thing about her life.
