What happens at the end of A Quiet Place Part II? The ending, and how Part III picks it up in 2027

A Quiet Place Part II runs 97 minutes and stops roughly four seconds after its last gunshot. Five years later, John Krasinski is finally shooting the film that was always meant to pick up from that cut.

Part II reached American cinemas on 28 May 2021 after a 14-month Covid delay, took $160 million domestically and $297.3 million worldwide, and opens with a day-one flashback — the only sequence in which Krasinski appears, since Lee Abbott died at the end of the first film. The main story resumes minutes after that ending, on day 474 of the invasion. Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds), Marcus (Noah Jupe) and the newborn leave the farm, Marcus steps into a bear trap, and the noise brings a creature. They end up sheltering in an abandoned steel foundry with Emmett (Cillian Murphy), an old family friend who has been living alone in a bunker beneath it since losing his wife and children.

From there the film splits into three strands and cross-cuts between them for the rest of its runtime.

The island, and what Regan finds there

Regan picks up a radio signal at Emmett's bunker: Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea" on a loop. She reads it as a broadcast from survivors and leaves alone. Evelyn sends Emmett after her; he finds her, argues, and ends up going with her.

At a marina on the way, they're attacked — not by creatures but by a group of survivors who have gone feral, and who try to rob and grab Regan. Emmett signals her into the water and makes enough noise to draw the creatures in. The marina group is killed. Emmett and Regan take a boat and reach the island.

The colony there is thriving. Djimon Hounsou's character explains the arithmetic that has kept them alive: the creatures can't swim. It holds until one drifts ashore on a boat.

The colony is attacked, Hounsou's character is killed, and Emmett is badly wounded drawing the creature away from Regan. She reaches the island's radio station, pulls the Darin record and patches the feedback from her cochlear implant into the broadcast instead. The creature goes vulnerable. She kills it.

What Marcus does in the bunker

Back at the foundry, Evelyn has gone out for medical supplies and an oxygen tank for Marcus's leg. In her absence Marcus and the baby seal themselves inside an airtight vault under the plant while hiding from a creature, and the oxygen starts running down. Evelyn gets back and gets them out. The creature is still in there with them.

Marcus has a portable radio. Regan's broadcast reaches it. He holds the speaker up, the creature's head opens, and he shoots it — the same beat as his sister's, several hundred miles apart, cut together.

Then the film ends. Where each character stands at that moment:

• Regan — on the island, in the radio station, with a working weapon against the creatures and a transmitter to spread it.
• Marcus — in the bunker, having killed a creature himself for the first time, leg still badly injured.
• Evelyn — wounded in the same attack, with the newborn, who has still not been given a name across two films.
• Emmett — alive but seriously hurt on the island.
• The colony — most of its residents dead, the island's one real defence proven useless.

Why it cuts off where it does

Krasinski said around Part II's original 2020 release that he already had elements of a third film in mind while writing the second, which explains an ending that functions as a middle act rather than a resolution. The broadcast is the plot engine he set up and didn't spend: a signal, a tower, and a means of killing the creatures that anyone with a radio can now use.

A Quiet Place: Day One, released in 2024, does not continue this thread. Michael Sarnoski's prequel, starring Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn, is set on invasion day in New York and connects to Part II only through a character. It took $139 million domestically and $262 million worldwide, bringing the franchise past $900 million across three films.

What's confirmed about Part III

Krasinski announced the film on Instagram on 1 August 2025, writing, directing and producing, with Paramount setting 9 July 2027. That date moved three weeks in October 2025 to Friday 30 July 2027, clearing James Gunn's Man of Tomorrow.

The announcement post was set to "One Last Time" from Hamilton — a song choice fans read immediately as a signal that Part III closes the story out.

Variety reported the cast on 16 March 2026: Blunt, Murphy, Simmonds and Jupe all returning, joined by Jack O'Connell, Jason Clarke and Katy O'Brian. Krasinski confirmed on Instagram in May 2026 that filming was underway, with production based in New York. Sunday Night Productions and Platinum Dunes are producing for Paramount. The plot is being kept secret.

Which leaves one unresolved question from 2021 that the third film can't reasonably dodge: whether Emmett survived the island, and whether Regan's broadcast ever got past it.
