Prime Video's Reacher has adapted four Lee Child novels across four seasons, and has picked them out of a hat that contains 30 books. Season 4, which began on 12 August 2026, is the fourth novel it has used and the 13th Child wrote.

Here's the running order, screen versus page.

Season by season

  • Season 1 — Killing Floor (1997), book one. The only time the show and the shelf agreed.
  • Season 2 — Bad Luck and Trouble (2007), book 11. Reacher's old army unit starts turning up dead.
  • Season 3 — Persuader (2003), book seven. Undercover on a Maine estate, with Olivier Richters as the bodyguard Paulie.
  • Season 4 — Gone Tomorrow (2009), book 13. A woman on a 2am New York subway train behaves exactly like a suicide bomber; the plot escalates from there into a blackmail conspiracy with a 1980s Afghanistan connection.
  • Season 5 — Make Me (2015), book 20, confirmed by Alan Ritchson and Amazon while season 4 was airing.

Why the order is scrambled

Because the books barely connect. Each Reacher novel is self-contained — he drifts into a town, ruins someone's day, leaves — so showrunner Nick Santora picks whichever one he thinks will play best on screen next. Child has said the coincidence of Killing Floor working as season one gave the production licence to go anywhere afterwards.

Ritchson confirmed the season 4 pick in June 2025 by posting a photo of himself holding Gone Tomorrow with four fingers raised on the other hand, captioned with a line from the novel about never knowing what you'll get when you step onto a subway car.

Season 4 isn't set where the book is set

Gone Tomorrow runs through New York City and Washington DC. Season 4 relocates to Philadelphia, largely because season 2 had already used a New York setting for a book set in California. None of Child's novels are set primarily in Philadelphia, so nothing is being spent that a future season would want back.

Not to be confused with the films

The two Tom Cruise films drew from the same series: Jack Reacher (2012) adapted One Shot, book nine, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016) adapted book 18.

There are 30 full-length novels as of summer 2026. Child's younger brother Andrew has been writing them for several years now, including 2025's Exit Strategy. At four books a decade, the show has roughly 65 years of material left.
