Spielberg and Weapons director Zach Cregger unite for The Flood, an original sci-fi thriller just unveiled at CinemaCon.

Zach Cregger is definitely not slowing down. If you caught Barbarian back in 2022, you know he’s one of the more interesting new voices in horror. Since then, he’s been on a roll. Seriously, blink and he’s attached to another high-profile project.

So, here’s the quick run-down of what Cregger’s got going on right now:

  • He just lined up his next movie after Weapons. This one has a release date locked in already, which means the studios are moving fast to stay ahead of the ‘hot new director’ arms race.
  • Weapons, by the way, is set for 2025 and stars Julia Garner and Josh Brolin—two names that aren’t exactly slumming it in genre films. Cregger wrote and directed, and early buzz is already strong.
  • On top of all that, Cregger is now in charge of bringing back the Resident Evil franchise (yes, again), writing and directing a movie that’s actually sticking closer to the video game’s universe than previous Hollywood attempts. The first footage from his reboot was shown at Sony’s CinemaCon presentation—which tells you the studio’s pretty confident about what they’ve got.
  • And while it sounds wild, Warner Bros. just announced yet another project from Cregger: The Flood, a Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi thriller that Cregger is both writing and directing.

It’s rare for a director to get this much momentum after a first big hit (read: not something that usually happens in Hollywood unless there’s real talent or some truly terrifying blackmail photos). But Cregger seems to be making the most of his moment, hopping from horror to video game adaptation to original science fiction like he’s speedrunning film genres.

One executive involved with these projects said,

'Zach has a unique vision and we’re betting big on it.'

No kidding—everyone seems to want a piece of what he’s doing right now.

Bottom line: Whether you like his style or not, expect to see the name Zach Cregger pop up in your movie news feed a lot over the next couple of years. With horror, sci-fi, and franchise reboots all in the pipeline, he’s quickly becoming one of the filmmakers Hollywood’s gambling on.
