Tom Holland Says He’ll Pass the Spider-Man Baton in the MCU
In a new interview, Tom Holland says he’s mapped out how he’d help the next Spider-Man take over — and it goes beyond a passing of the torch.
Right, so it looks like we're finally seeing some movement on Tom Holland's eventual Spider-Man send-off—and no, it's not just the usual superhero actor rumour mill churning. Holland himself has actually addressed the passing of the Spidey torch, and just ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day landing in cinemas, we've got a proper glimpse into what he's thinking.
The Plan to Pass the Mask
Chatting on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Holland made it clear that what happens after his run as Peter Parker isn't some last-minute studio scramble—it's something the team has been cooking up for years. He says they've been working out a roadmap for Spider-Man's future since wrapping up No Way Home all the way back in 2021. So, despite the usual moving pieces you get with these big Marvel franchise machines, there are real discussions about how they handle the infamous Spider-legacy handover.
Holland told host Josh Horowitz: "Oh, yeah, there's a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished 'Spider-Man: No Way Home.' It's laid out, it's gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it's really exciting. I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing that I want to do most in this character, for sure."
Of course, Hollywood plans and what we see on screen aren't always the same thing. Scripts get rewritten, actors bail, studios change their minds. But it's telling that Holland isn't just thinking about how he bows out—he's genuinely keen on being part of what comes next, almost as if he'd rather help launch the next Spider-Man than just vanish at the end of his own movie.
This Spider-baton handover has been on the cards since No Way Home wrapped in 2021.
Spider-Man: No Way Home marked Holland's third run as the character, with plans for his successor already in active discussion since the film completed filming in 2021.
Nothing official yet about who picks up the suit—whether it's a familiar face from the comics or someone entirely new—but if Holland actually gets his wish, expect a proper, well-planned transition for Spider-Man. At the very least, it sounds like the next major web-slinger moment has already been set in motion behind Marvel's closed doors.
