Hype is surging: the action epic The Odyssey is already being hailed a masterpiece well ahead of its summer release.

Christopher Nolan tackling The Odyssey has basically hit peak anticipation in the movie/TV world this year. Yeah, Nolan always goes big, but the buzz around this one is that it might be his most over-the-top, ambitious swing yet. Everyone’s expecting fireworks. And now, it sounds like at least one of the film’s stars is ready to double down on the hype.

If you want gushing early praise, Tom Holland has you covered. In a new chat with GQ, Holland didn’t waste time laying it on thick for Nolan’s take on Homer’s ancient classic. He flat-out called The Odyssey 'an absolute masterpiece', and he’s convinced it’s a whole different beast compared to anything else out there. Of course, you expect actors to say nice things on the press tour, but it really does seem like Holland was gobsmacked after seeing the movie start to finish.

'There were certain sequences in the movie where I’m watching it and I’m just sort of thinking like, How on earth has he done that? That has to be CG. And then after [watching] the movie [I asked Nolan], That was definitely CG, right? And he’s like, No, no, no, that’s all in camera effects. Very planned, very prepared.'

Not going to lie, I always have to take these 'I was amazed!' stories from actors with a grain of salt, but you can practically hear Holland's brain short-circuiting while he tries to figure out how some of these scenes actually got on film. Apparently, Nolan is once again proving he's the absolute nerd king of practical effects—choosing to do outlandish visuals in front of the camera, not in post with computers. Holland actually thought some shots had to be CGI, and Nolan shut that idea down: all practical, all on set, just deeply meticulous planning. No easy shortcuts here.

Details about who exactly is in the cast and how the story is being reworked for the screen are still under wraps. If you’re wondering about wild monsters, gods, and boat-smashing storms—no confirmation yet, but if Nolan's track record is anything to go by, expect meticulous spectacle, not a Marvel-style green screen extravaganza.

  • Christopher Nolan writer/director, apparently still allergic to CGI
  • Tom Holland main cast, extremely enthusiastic
  • Rest of the cast: TBA, details hush-hush for now

There’s more to come as Warner Bros. rolls out the marketing machine and starts actually letting fans see footage, but for now, consider the bar set high—not that anyone ever expects Nolan to play it safe. Stick around for more on The Odyssey when we finally get a trailer (or literally any official images).
